Thank you to all you Cummins owners for your valuable information. With 30 years of Cummins I would imagine why some people like different gens over the others for different reasons.
I now unfortunately can’t seem to sell my current truck to replace it with a Cummins. So I have a new question! What year/gen engine would you swap into the vehicle of your “dreams.” I know that I’d be more than happy with a Cummins under my GM hood but because of it because more computer heavy I’m not sure how a 12 valve would compared to a 5.9 common rail. I would be pairing up the engine with my Allison obviously. I can’t find good answers on YouTube so I’m asking here. Thank you in advance!

My 2007 5.9 is a quantum leap over my 98.5 24v.
Better steering,way better comfort and the braking is so much better.
I'll take the 3rd 5.9's.

|bigfish95971||98 to 02 have much better interior than earlier. Third gen have bigger Quad and Crew Cab that yo can not get in 2nd gen. Got 99 24v with 680k mi on it. Stock VP's are great so long as lift pumps are good.|

My 97 5spd 3.54 2wd was the best for reliable and simple. Those gears were great for street fun, commuting and towing upto 10k.
My 03 HO 6spd 4.10 2wd was an early apps engine and super reliable after replacing the apps. That gear setup made it, by far, the best workhorse I'll probably ever have and it got 18+ mpg @ 80 mph hiway. Both those 2wd trucks had rack and pinion and handled like cars.
My 12 auto 3.73 is a great compromise for work and empty hiway. Not much suds For the first 50 feet but it loves to tow 15k at 70 mph or as fast as I have gnads to go. This one is 4wd and doesn't handle nearly as nice as 2wd.
Overall the 03 was the best. All three trucks were/are modded for towing. Craig

Acouple things that I’ve picked up on with all of my Cummins I’ve had
I’ve had 12v VE pump 12v p pump 3rd gen 6.7
I love the 12v the best doesn’t matter the body style the motors are just very reliable
6.7s are nice but I’d still rather daily my 12v
With that being said all of your older trucks are going to be super high in price for a nice one or you can get a beat up worn out one cheap
So either reliability for a lot or needing to replace a lot of parts for cheap
Most of the older ones are going to need interior pieces replaced and front end work and oil leaks fixed and all that good stuff and Ac work
Some of the more higher priced ones will need those things too just might not be as much so just look at your different options and see what best suits you and how much money you want to spend up front and in the long run

|9297oldram||The best 12v's are the ones you put in your choice of trucks and make them the way you like them. Do away with the PCM's and you'll have alot more dependable truck.|

|98whitelightnin||98 12v is rare and so are replacement parts. I held out for mine and scoured all over craigslist until I found it. I dont like the auto trans trucks and even a built 47re is not for me. Your allison is great but would cost you $15k to build and put behind a cummins. My first 2nd gen was a 98 24v auto and it eventually got a manual trans swap and then a p-pump, it was a great truck and fun to drive but I thought I needed an extended cab at the time.|

My father has had a 2nd gen as long as I’ve been alive. He’s had a 24v and I certainly do like the interior change that took place in 98, but wouldn’t mind a change in style. Plus the 98 12 valve is rare.
I would be happy to find a manual trans but they’re so hard to find stock and the pricing is ridiculous. I’d almost be more interested in getting an automatic, drive the trans until it can’t shift no more than through an Allison behind er’. I will say, I do love my Allison in my current truck, but the d-max is pretty garbage.

|DirtyWilly||How do you like the drivability factor and ride? I’m not to concerned about getting more power out the truck, but I am looking for the most reliable. I would like to drive the truck that I buy for as long as possible, and am sure both 1st and 2nd would work. There are some 4th gens I could possibly afford but I got to drive a 2012 last night and wasn’t impressed with the way it felt while driving.|

|98whitelightnin||I have yet to own a 1st gen but have had all others and although the 4th gens are really nice, I like 2nd gens best. Easy to work on and if you get a manual 2 valver, there are very little electronics to fail. Hunting for parts is fun and I feel victorious finding what I need in a wrecking yard. If I could go back and buy a brand new one, it would be a 1997 5 speed. I like the 98's ive had but like the dash layout and a/c controls better in the 94-97's.|
