Heated mirror switch wires melting

What’s up guys, I have a 2001 dodge 24v cummins, I went to turn on my mirror heaters earlier and all the sudden smoke starts coming out of my dash. So I pulled it all apart and the wires for the switch melted. What can I do to just eliminate it and prevent this from happening. I pulled the fuse and snipped the wires so I could tape em off but I wanna be sure they won’t be live. Anyone experience this before?
