Chrysler Recalls 280,000 Ram Pickups

Chrysler has announced that it is recalling some 280,000 Ram pickups in the US, Canada and Mexico along with several other parts of the world.

The trucks, ranging from model years 2008 to 2011 are being recalled for defective outer tie rods on the left side, which can cause front-end miss alignment, excessive steering and tire wear and potential tie rod failure.

The automaker said, the problem most frequently occurs during low speed driving, such as in parking lots when drivers are making tight turns. The recall affects both light and heavy-duty trucks, including 4 x 4 Ram 1500 Mega Cab models, up to and including 2500 and 3500 pickup and 4 x2 chassis cabs, as well as older trucks (2003-08 model 2500 and 3500 rigs) that received these tie rods as replacement in-service items.

This marks the second time in less than year that Chrysler has had to recall trucks for tie rod ends, a previous one was issued back in December, that affected heavy-duty 4500 and 5500 chassis cab trucks.

I have an 07 5.9 and my tie rod snapped a few weeks ago when i was driving down the road. Thank God i was only going about 30mph. I heard from a bunch of friends that this has been a problem in a lot of 3rd generation rams and older. One friend was pulling a trailer going 70 down the hwy when his snapped and it through his truck into the median and into another vehicle. Dodge needs to fix this. Apparently this part isnt really meant to last.

Do you think I should change my 05 2500 4X4's? All it does is run down the interstate with a fifth wheel behind it.

The reason Dodge isn't too concerned about their steering problems is because no one has been killed yet. If it's just close calls, they can shrug that off.
