Nearly 500K Ram HD Pickup Trucks Recalled for Fire Hazard

Quote:
The recall addresses a faulty water pump.

According to Ram, an investigation has discovered certain trucks are equipped with a water-pump bearing that, after exposure to certain conditions, may overheat and potentially cause a fire in the engine bay. The recall affects 2013-2017 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups, as well as 3500, 4500, and 5500 chassis cabs. The affected units are all powered by a 6.7-liter engine and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has confirmed Ram no longer equips vehicles with that water pump.

Lemme guess, it is going to be another 6-12 month backorder on parts... Maybe another buyback?

I'm assuming this same water pump is used in all the cummins equipped trucks? Article makes it sound as if only those with a cel should get it fixed. I rather not wait til I'm going down the hwy with 8500#+ in tow for the light to come on to get it fixed. Guess I should just wait for my letter. I never allow the dealer to service my truck, but for this I wouldn't hesitate to take it in as long as it doesn't require a computer flash. Every time they do that they screw stuff up. Dealers in the STL area are terrible. I'm sure we'll find out more details as this progresses. I'm going to be a bit nervous tomorrow driving 4 hours with trailer in tow knowing this now, that's for sure. Hard to believe trucks still under warranty are catching fire, but I have been hearing about this.

I'm cautiously curious on this recall, unless it hasn't been updated, I checked my VIN# on their website and my truck has no active recalls listed.

Same here, haven't seen anything on there yet. still keeping this in the back of my mind. No problems yesterday though after 4 hours in this 97 degree record setting heat.

There needs be criminal responsibility to the CEO's of these manufacturers. Something like that can really screw a person over. You know, like having your work truck burn to the ground.

I am sure hoping some improved water pumps come out of this recall. I speak from experience the pucker factor is intense when you lose one while driving, it is down right dangerous. I have had 2 go out and take the belt thus very little brakes and steering, and 1 sitting in a parking lot. It is really the only thing that has stranded me on these trucks and the only part that I worry about.

I agree, to bad a cummins original water pump couldn't stay in the engine because of the POS EGR system needing more cooling. It just a had to be a failed mopar pump.
