Dude, I know how to do math and convert from liters to gallons... my point was that we want, want, want, but aren't willing to pay for it. Want lower emissions, well you either need better quality fuel, grossly more efficient engines, or you have to choke the bejeesus out of engines. We (more appropriately the EPA and CARB) aren't failing but completely refusing to see the forest for the trees. We can't save the world from pollution by becoming a zero emissions automotive state any better than we can prevent wars by being World Police. Especially when we're ignoring the largest polluter: the power production plants which fuel the lefties' lauded EV messiahs. EVs don't pollute less; they just move the pollution from a tailpipe to a power plant. Difference is power companies are allowed to purchase pollution exemptions (bribe the government to avoid being inspected and fined). Europe taxes the crap out of everything but in return they get amazing roads, high quality fuel, and efficient vehicles. The vehicles are efficient because nobody can afford to pay for the mandated-quality fuel. Last time I was in Europe, mid-grade was 100 octane. Diesel cetane was posted 80 IIRC. When I left Bosnia one could regularly find 110-114 octane and all commercial diesel was 80. The jet-A we ran in the humvees was garbage by comparison. We got better mileage and power running those junk 6.5 TDs on rakia (moonshine) than we did on-base fuel. And with gasoline I'm aware higher octane equates to less BTUs, but its higher knock resistance means you can run higher cylinder pressure (either forced induction or static compression) which yields higher efficiency and a cleaner, more complete burn. So please, chillax a bit before trying to school me on VAT and European cost of living... I've been there quite a bit. Mostly passing thru or training courtesy of uncle sam's taxpayer funded sightseeing adventures incorporated. Try to take stuff in context rather than keyboard sniping individual points.
