Chrysler to Close 789 Dealerships by June 9th

According to the latest bankruptcy court filings by Chrysler, the company plans to cut 789 dealerships (one quarter of the current dealer network) in an effort to emerge as a financially viable company.

The company sent out overnight letters to the dealerships that will be eliminated.

As expected in bankruptcy, Chrysler will not buy-back the vehicles, tools or parts, but it will put the dealerships in touch with surviving dealers who can then work out a purchase.

Chrysler also plans to push ahead with a plan to put all of its brands under one roof. Currently 68 percent of dealerships carry Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep products, but after the 789 are closed, that number will rise to 80 percent.

There appears to be even more strategy involved as well as 345 of the dealerships being shut down (or roughly 44 percent) also sell vehicles from a competing brand.

Steven Landry, Chrysler's VP of Sales, spoke optimistically about the future of the 789 dealerships, stating that 83 percent of the businesses sell more used cars than new and that half of them sell fewer than 100 cars per year. "The majority of these dealerships are going to continue on and prosper either selling used cars or other brands," he said.

The 789 dealerships will receive a 23 business day court review of their individual situation.

I dropped my truck off at one of the axed dealerships this morning for warranty work not even thinking about them being one of those that got cut. Well, at 10:30 they called me and said I had to come get my truck because they couldn't do the work.

Fortunately they sent my parts to a dealership about 12 miles away and they are going to do the work next friday.

Bummer deal all around. Nice to see our tax dollars at work

I'm on Maui with the one and only Chrysler dealer who is closing. Now I wonder what will I do when I need warranty work? I even purchased the extended warranty

What to do?

Wow that is a bad deal in Hawaii. Here is what I would do, first call Chrysler at 1-800-992-1997 and ask them what you should do, I would think they would reimburse you reasonable costs to have repairs done by an independent as long as they used Mopar parts. No promises from me but all they can do is say yes or no. By the way if you get a customer service rep. that speaks poor English hang up and call back or ask for another . rep. Good luck and keep me posted as to the outcome. You may have to call the president as he did say they would assume the warranty in his last speech and he also said Chrysler would survive.

Hawaii

I forgot to add Chrysler Service contracts will and has reimbursed customers that have a failure and the repairs were covered. They will also pay independent facilities over the phone via credit card, but I remind you prior approval must be obtained. Chrysler Service contracts is a great warranty company, been using them for 23 years and never had a problem. There brochure says if you are unable to obtain service from an authorized dealer call 1-800-521-9922. My best to you.....Gene

Thanks for your help Gene

Just got off the phone with Chrysler Service Contract ( 1-800-992-1997 ). Spoke with Rick and explained to him my (our) situation here on Maui that we are unable to just put our vehicles on a barge and ship it to Windward Dodge on Oahu. He does not have an answer to this situation but says he and a few others will be working on getting our service needs. For now we are still screwed
