Sierra Classic Buildup

Figured I'd start a build thread on here, found myself a very nice 1986 GMC K30, and have decided to do a rebuild and build up on it. It has a factory 6.2/SM465 combo, and I'm gonna tear that gutless wonder out in favor of a 1997 12 valve from a parts truck I've purchased. The GMC is a full load, AC, cruise, tilt steering, power doors, and in not too bad a shape.

So the 12 valve is for sure going in, but not too sure I want to use the 47Rh from the donor truck. I'm always partial to the NV5600, but have been researching running a 68Rfe with an aftermarket controller. Still deciding on that. In the meantime, found some king ranch seats in a junkyard, so those may well make their way into the build at some point

Nice! Sounds like a good build! I don't remember seeing anyone do the 68 RFE, so that'll be interesting for sure!

It's 4.10 right now, but i'd like to regear with 3.73s. I've been trying without much luck to find info on swaps behind a 12 valve, but it hasn't been documented very well. I know at least one guy makes what looks to be a decent controller, but it's way more electronics than I ever hoped to have on this thing. We'll have to see. I do love my NV5600s

4.10 is perfect with a 68. I hate electronics more than most but I did enjoy the 68 in my 4th gen.

Is that the one you used on the 47Re in your thread? Does the fella make one for a 68? Guess I could ask as well

Yeah, I guess they’re a double overdrive, eh? Reckon I could try it before regearing. I’ve owned a lot of 4.10 trucks with the cummins, and I just associate them with poor highway cursing rpms

That's a sweet GMC! I think the NV5600 would be a cool idea if you don't mind adding in another pedal.
What do you plan on using the truck for?

89 F250 Fummins - 92 12v, ARP head studs, P7100 pump, AFC mods, 3k governor spring, 7mm DVs, Mack rack plug, 5x14s, performance LP, hx35, 4" custom exhaust, Valair clutch kit, Zf5 trans, Autometer gauges
