94 Crew Cab Chevy + P Pump Cummins + ZF6 + SAS - Build Thread

Alright guys I had a build thread on here before but none of the pictures work anymore so I decided to reupload them and have a new thread with working pictures. My build has been going on for 2 years now and I am an 18 year old kid that is going to be a welding student soon.

Anyways I started this build with a 1991 non intercooled w350 that I was going to put a Ford body on the frame.


I ended up getting a deal on a 94 CCLB Dually Chevy that had a 6.5l in it so I decided to paint the Cummins motor and pull it off of the 91 frame and chop up the frame.



Here is the new truck for the swap!





Pulled the 6.5l and 4l80E out without ever pulling an engine before.



Test fit the first gen motor in the Chevy! (Later sold this engine and trans and got p pump motor)




Next I started on the SAS, had a friend do most of the work since I didn't know much at the time.






Here is a motor mount pic of how it was done if anyone is curious.


Took the old bed off because it was pretty rusty and it had a hole in the bed from a stack!


Finally got some steering work done.




Now my friend bought this POS Cummins swap f150 just for the nv4500 and he didn't want the motor so he sold it to me for $1000.

Pulled the first gen motor and getrag to sell without the transfercase for $2,500 when I paid less than that and it was delivered to my house!


Found a deal on a zf6 since I didn't have a transmission anymore.


Saving the Cummins from the green pile....


And taking the green truck to the junk yard where it belongs!!


Then I decided to give the new to me Cummins a paint job because it was pretty ugly.




I didn't want to spend the same amount on an adapter plate as I did the transmission so I decided to take a piece of 3/8 in plate to a machine shop to see if they could make me something. I gave them my transmission and nv4500 adapter plate and they came up with this for $400 and it uses the Dodge starter and I didn't need a crank spacer!


Putting the pieces together...


Test fit with the new adpater plate. (had to cut floor)


Ready to go in!


I ended up doing a dash swap because I didn't like the 88 to 94 sqaure ones. So I found a nice 95 dash that had no airbags and painted it! (still not complete)


Got some new headlights and painted the bow tie black.


Then one day I was worried the head gasket blew on the truck so this is when things started to get serious. I pulled the head off of the truck...



Then I found myself cutting the intake plenum off with an angle grinder.


Gave it a nice port and polish.




Got the head back from being milled.


Then I got the head decked and the holes drilled for the intake. I ended up tapping them and I had o rings installed after I took this picture.


Started to work on the new runner intake!




Here it is done with the head ready to go back on! Oh and a new color scheme.

The head is back on with ARP head studs.


I finally got a new bed for the truck! Sat for over a year without one on it.


The truck was getting a compound turbo setup so I had to relocate the second battery to the drivers side. I just made a new tray out of some angle, two half inch bolts, some 1/8 flat stock, and the old battery tray.




Then I made the HT3B turbo support mount and put it where I wanted it!


After that I made the hot pipe and wrapped it.


And after two years this is how it looks under the hood! Hopefully going to get this running within a month because I need to drive it to school. More updates to come very soon!

Had a really busy summer at work. Did over 50 hours a week most of the time and I work from 12 til 10 or 2 til 12. Cooking is a tiring job so I didn't work on it much! Only had one day off a week the whole summer.

Looks like you're doing a fine job!

One thing I noticed. On your steering when using HEIM joints I always thought it was good practice to set them up in a double shear and if not that then have a flat washer in place to keep the socket on the joint from coming completely off the bolt in case of failure. Maybe I'm wrong but I feel I read that somewhere.

Either way, I'm looking forward to more progress

I have safety washers installed now. They are like a flat washer but they are shaped kind of like a cone, adds some misalignment too.

Subscribed. I like the spring hangers that were built for the SAS. Can you post a pic of the shackle hangers? Also, what leaf springs are you using? By the way, that homemade engine to tranny adapter plate turned out awesome!
