Do not use the nv4500 nut retainer from 5th gear...

first im not gona sugar coat things here,I hotshot for a living so i tow heavy usually 20k to 26k lbs and i run @ 275hp nothing crazy. ive been through 5 nv4500 reman transmissions so far in about 120k miles. One thing i can tell u is nothing lasts forever and bullitproof is a lie but i cannot get a nv4500 past 30k miles and its always fifth gear eather it brakes the teeth off the gears or sheeres the splines off the full spline mainshaft or the little gear just explodes. all im asking for is atleast 100k .Now some may ask why do u,tow in 5th well this is why my truck in a 4:10 truck with 235 85 16s so anything above 50 mph,it,has to be in 5th. Anyway i wanted to share my last failure with you, guys i used the 5th,gear nut retainer sold by 5th gear repair .com i used a standard locknut and washer due to not, enough room for the split washer i usually run. Not even 15k on this thing and it took out my transfer case it pushed so hard on the transfer case input shaft it broke the snap, ring then pushed it back destroying the low lock shift fork assembly. Oh ya the nut retainer broke all 4 little tabs off and then the nut backed off.i never fully lost 5th though just horrible grinding out of the t case. Now the trasfer case needs rebuilt and im kinda done with the nv4500 unless someone comes out with a real fix for these things.Mainly the 4:10 and heavy towing are the cause of all this. Hopfully something will hold together.

I dont understand what happened to my posting but here it is again i ran it for approx 15k it broke all four little tabs then the nut came loose putting extreme pressure on the input shaft of my np241dhd transfer case braking the front snap ring to the input shaft then it pushed the input shaft of the t case into the four low lock shift fork destroying that. Now t case needs rebuilt. Not impressed

They are in my back yard. Have you spoke to them about it? I don't know anybody using that fix so I'm not sure what their failure rates are.

I'm interested to see what you find out or where this goes, because awhile back when this new "fix" was circulating around the forums, I was skeptical based on two things. 1) Its only designed to work on 4wd truck. And 2) because of reason number 1, that means that it used the T-case as support against the new retainer so as to stop it from being able to back away. That seems to weird to me since logic would tell ya that transmitting the load from one component to another component, asking that second component to bear more load than it was designed for isn't going to solve any issues.....but place more stress on the second component, and therefor cause other unforeseen issues. I may be wrong, and I remember how this company was praised too for their brand new concept and how affective it supposedly works. But.....I've ONLY ever heard that the CORRECT fix is to replace the whole shaft with a new fully splined shaft. Even at that, you still have a gear that hangs out being supported by one side. Not necessarily a problem.....until you put a huge low RPM torque Cummins in front of it.

So that goes around the stock nut? Interesting... Have you tried the "updated" nut? These are what we would install at the shop I used to work at when the stocker backed off. I also used plenty of loctite and made sure it was nice and tight. I only saw one come back and that was because the guy at our shop who installed it didn't put loctite on it.

I've seen this become a more common repair say 1 - 1.5 years ago. While I say more common I mean guys started talking about them etc. I have yet to know anybody personally running one. Hopefully they can/will provide some meaningful insight/causation and how to prevent it. Doubt they will do anything for the additional damage. Which sucks but on the other hand if their parts were not on there the worst that would happen is the nut and gear fall to the back of the shaft.

I have no idea what nut is in my truck but I'm hear to say that not all trucks had the 5th gear nut issue. I'm at 221k miles and hauled or towed heavy the entire life of this truck and even climbing steep mountain grades as steep as 16% without a single issue. I've got several theories on what causes 5th gear nut issues.

So do I. I've tried to narrow some of my "theories" down too, but getting anyone to describe their driving habits, or remember when and how their 5th gear issue happened, has proven unsuccessful.
