Do I need this bolt?

Long story short, was going to make a kdp cover but I found out I have the updated timing case and I forgot to put the bolt back in... Truck is all back together now running and I found the bolt sitting in my bench after I got that awesome feeling of success when truck starts and runs. Needless to say that good feeling went away real quick.

So what now guys? Just leave it alone without the bolt or undo the weeks worth of work I put in?

Welcome, Any pics would have to be approved by forum before they post it. May take a day or two. You did not say what the bolt does?
I know of no bolts the used in design of the truck that are not needed.
Often missing bolts will cause others to come loose or unsupported things to break. Bolts from exterior to interior will often leak oil, air or water etc.

99 2500, Quad cab, 4x4 47RE, BD pressure lock on it, small BD 90/140 chip on the VP 44 connection plug, 17" 3rd gen wheels. 3.55 diffs. Ruenell front bumper and warn winch, Rancho adj shocks. 663k miles.

It's the bolt that is right next to kdp, right above the cam gear.

A timing cover bolt? You know what you have to do, just make plans for it.....cool weather, plenty of time to do it, good tunes on the radio.

It's under the timing cover, pretty sure it hold the timing case to the block. Yeah I guess I will have to just do it. I just need a break from wrenching on this truck.

Began with tear down, resealed the vacuum and power steering pumps, installed new fass ddrp lift pump, New sealing washers everywhere. New tappet cover gasket that continued to leak, had to use a gasket sealant see how long that lasts... New vp44 from thoroughbred diesel, and the main reason for opening the timing cover is because I dropped the key off the vp44 shaft😠. I couldn't find it even with magnet fishing in the oil pan... So it must now be in the oil sump.

So yeah next weekend maybe I'll do it should be in the low 90s which is cool compared to our triple digit summer temps.

Anyone else lose the key from the vp44 or forgot an important bolt???

Timing cover isn't that bad imo, usually takes me 3 ish hours total to set the timing on my p-pump. Just don't let it be that ill do it later never get done thing.

Not exactly. I did drop a metal rod down a cylinder once checking for tdc, almost had to pull the head till I got lucky with a magnet.

I did the superglue trick on the VP key.

Well took the truck to work today to get a good heat cycle in and wouldn't you know it the tappet cover is leaking like a sieve. Yet another reason to redo it all. Oh well...

Somebody else recently had a tappet cover gasket that had a little ridge seal on the flat surface partly around it and it leaked. Get one from Cummins that is smooth all the way around.

I know exactly what your talking about. This seal i have now does have a raised ridge on the straight parts but it doesn't go around the corners i thought it was odd.. I will be getting another genuine cummins gasket.

Just buy it down the street at any truck shop or Cummins shop if you have one. Cheaper for OEM, lower price and no freight..
If by chance it is thicker on one side of the groove put the thick side against the block.
