24V Killer Dowel Pin

I wasn't able to find any hard evidence as to whether the 24 valves still had a killer dowel pin or not so I decided to dig into my 98.5 to see what I would find. My dowel pin was protruding into the case by about 1/16", I'll post a pic of what it looked like. I tapped it back in and tabbed it, I don't know if it would have come all the way out but now I sleep well at night Hopefully this helps anyone else with a 24 valve who is on the fence about doing it. Truck only had 54k miles on it btw.

That's good to know, I have a 2000 24v and I'll have to check it out when I pull the timing cover soon (crank and cover seal leaking) my truck has 540k on it

they have them, but they are not an issue in a 24v...

They probably are not known to cause issues with 24v's cause vp44's arn't spinning 4k+. It's the same design as a 12v. That and perhaps the resonance created from turning a p-pump, who knows.

I think i remember reading that they tapered the pins in the 24v to prevent them from comming out

thansk for the info, I have a 24v, in a 2000 dodge. So I too thought you had to deal with it? I was going to do it for preventative care like you all. So, to confirm it is not an issue in the 24v? Thanks for any info.

could it be...sure. is it normally, no.

there was a redesign of the case i do believe. i dont recall, but i thought yhe case cover has numb that keeps it from extracting all the one.

^^^^ Correct. The case has a stepped hole that won't allow the pin to fall into the gear case. In other words if the pin is 5/16" the hole into the case is only 1/4" for the last 1/4" or so allowing access to knock it out the other way if need be, but it can't come out into the case. Both my 99 engines had this newer style stepped hole but the internet claims KDP's in models as late as 2002. Only way to know for sure is to pull the cover.
