I myself am not interested in upgrading my box to a 4k, but I know a lot of guys are. So I went out to the truck and pulled my box out and took it apart. Simple to do. There are 2 screws on the face of the unit that once out allow you to remove the board. I snapped a few pictures of the board. Keep in mind that this is a 98.5-00 adrenline. I would be interested to see some 01 and 02 boxes also, regardless of the 4k or standard.
Looking over it there are a few things that stick out as something that could be changed in order to allow for the 4k upgrade. I found a post from 2010 from quadzilla stating that the box needed a simple change internally that took less than a minute. I would assume , if this is the true, that this means that the change has to be pretty simple to do. Jason verified this in a thread recently about changing to 4k. He however stated that he has no interest in doing this for people so please don't bother him about it. We can't blame him for not wanting to pickup where quad left us hanging.
Here is the full front face of the board
Here is the full rear face ( mirror it in your mind to see the front vs back lineup of parts)
Here is the left side of the board. You have the 2x10 chip space empty and a jumper. Does anyone know what the jumper does? I have read that people reported removing the jumper for more accurate boost readings? https://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/98...or-issues.html
Here is another thread to confirm this jumper has to do with boost and differences between year trucks.
Here is the right side of the board showing the 2 things that I see as easy to replace. I believe that they are resitors, but I am not very good with techincal names. What I see however is the ability to easily solder a different part into place of it.
Here is the back as you can see there are only 4 items that I see as easily change able. Everything else is soldered into the middle boards of the main board. Two "resistors"? ( not up to snuff on technical names), a jumper, and an empty socket for a 2x10 chip
I figured that if we could get a picture or two of a 4k box internally that we might be able to spot the difference. Is anyone with a 4k box willing do take it apart and snap some pictures? It would be nice to put to rest the questions about going to 4k boxes and hopefully keep people from loading a 4k tune onto a regular box. Does anyone have any first hand knowledge of the "change" that needs to be made?
