Edge Tuner question

A friend of mine told me last weekend, that the higher the tune...better the fuel mileage. If you keep your foot out of the pedal. Is that true?

I have an Edge CTS tuner and a Max Boost box. The guy I bought this otherwise stock truck told me he ran the truck at a 5 for everyday driving. He would turn it up to 9 if he towed or hauled anything.

I kind of want to stick to what the old owner said that worked for him, but my buddy has several Cummins trucks and has built one of them to pull a sled. He seems to know what he is talking about.

What say you?

drive it and try it...

there is always a point dependant on what thevehicle is doing.

personally, i have seen similar with my setup.

i did a Portland to St.Louis trip...never shut the truck off. hand calc was 23.4 mpg. my travels were unloaded, and mostly 80 mph.

you must find the sweet spot for your truck.

normal driving, i lower the tune choice and i see better mpg for the mix/town driving.

I have an Edge Juice tuner and I get my best mileage on the max tune at level 5x5. I usually drive pretty casual, but I don't notice much if any difference in mpg if I get a little heavy footed.

2001 Ram QC SLT 4X4 5.9/AT(Built) BHAF, Pusher, FASS150, 4" DP, 5" Aussies, built transmission, GS gauges, steering brace, EJWA-CTS2, BD Stealth cover, turnbuckle mod, Fire Truck horn, 4th gen tow mirrors, 3rd gen brakes, switchbacks, high/3cyl switch.

If you want to know why best mpg comes on 5x5 this article covers it

https://mopar1973man.com/cummins/art...-cummins-r564/

Effectively has to do with the timing maps

Those maps were like reading Chinese to me. I am a parts changer...not a mechanic. Basically, the easier it is (more power) to move the truck down the road, the better the MPG. Set at the higher tune and keep your foot out of the pedal.

Thanks fella's...

with my setup, and a superchips tuner on mileage/performance (lite fuel and timing increase), i can see 23 on the hiway running 80mph.

Why do I find it impossible to believe that best fuel economy in a pickup truck is at 80 MPH where drag is a lot higher?

Probably because the highest final drive ratio is in effect and the motor is within its optimal performance rpm range based upon timing, load, etc.

agreed...the right tune and the 1900 ish rpm sweet spot of the 5.9 is key.

i have always heard that 1900-2000 rpm is the best spot rpm wise for mileage.
