Steering.... Pushing my steering wheel

Well after a lot of work my steering is good and tight.

But there is still something that needs attention. While driving, I really get a lot of feed back into the steering wheel.... I bought a fox stabilizer from Thuren thinking this would help and it did some but when I go over bumps and heaves in the roads it pushes my steering wheel around... which can't be good for the steering box.

I don't recall this being an issue on my last 2nd gen... just not seeing what it could be.

There are 2 things I have not confirmed.

Toe - Could a slight toe out cause my steering wheel to get pushed? Don't seem likely. But I have a hunch I have some toe out issues.

Ball Joints .... can't confirm they are good, or bad. The tire wear is good and I do not get a any noise or feel anything going over bumps.... other than my steering wheel getting worked on.

I really noticed it more and more once I had everything reinforced and tight in the steering system.... now it's all transmitting road issues into the steering wheel instead of absorbing.

Does it follow dips and cracks in the road?

Yeah it does some, but not as bad as when the steering was a mess. I do move the wheel in both directions more than seems normal, to compensate for crown also...

Have you adjusted the cam bolts in the lower control arms? I have my caster set so the front pushes down, dont know if its positive or negative but that helped my trucks steering alot.

Yes, I've given the truck Caster, one notch from full on each side.

His truck has aftermarket coils and maybe sits higher. I'd add more caster bud.

It's about 2.5" higher in the front.... like a leveling kit. Does that usually want as much caster as I can put in it?

I'm running about 4.5* negative caster and can let go of the steering wheel on the freeway.

How are your tires wearing? What is the stock setting supposed to be?

go to an alignment shop. a good one. they will tell you if your ball joints are bad, if they are not they will align everything for you; insted of just taking a stab at it. they may even adjust the preload on the gear box if you ask nicely

IIRC the stock setting is around 2 or 2.5* negative. I have 49000 miles on my procomp XMT's. They are feathered and rough but thats still some good miles IMO.
