dana 70 limited slip swap

ok this might be a dump question to some but im not really skilled in differentials. everything should be up to date on my sig. Im planning on converting my open rear to a limited slip rear. I have a dana 70 with 3:55 gears, i dont know what the axle spline is. My question is, am i able to pull my open carrier out put my ring gear straight onto the limited slip carrier and put it straight back in without moving any shims? or am i going to have move shims around or reset the backlash? any help would be great guys, thanks.

Try it, be ready to do set-up though, I have gotten lucky many times but there is the chance it's not going to work out and you'll be doing it all, pinion shouldn't change though.

Currently working to fix PO mistakes then...mod time

Ok so worst case scenario I would have to reset the shims? Should I buy new shims?

different carrier requires the rear end be set up. A small difference in size can cause gear wear from misalignment. Be sure you know how to set it up or get someone who does.

1997 3500 club cab 3.54 gears towing & camper pkg. Still stock with a built transmission at 120k. 4" exhaust, 4kgsk, and exhaust brake waiting for installation. 37337 upgrade. Still need ideas for improvements for hauling 15k fifth wheel.

I figured something would change from putting a different carrier in but I wouldn't think the pinion alignment would change. How many thousands of play should I have side to side when shimming?
