Unhappy 96 12V Oil Pressure

I have a 96 cummins (140K) and the oil pressure guage will drop to nothing and the truck quits. Seems to be fine while rolling down the road. mostly does it in reverse at idle. Is the sending unit the problem or is there a real chance the pump is going bad?

First of all, WELCOME!! Sorry to hear about your truck, however, your problems may be simple to fix. It sounds like you have an auto tranny. (reason to fill out your sig) Does it idle at the right RPM? It should idle at 750 RPM with the tranny in gear (auto) and with the A/C on. If it is idling to slow it will do just exactly what yours is doing. Look HERE for instructions. You may also have a sending unit dying too. That is also a very common problem. Look HERE for a drawing of your engine. The oil pressure sending unit is right behind the power steering pump.

p.s. I moved it to the 12v forums for you.

how common is the oil sender? i had one in my 95 go from 50 psi to zero while on the h'way, but my 98 gives me a check guages light when i come to a sudden stop, the pressure goes to zero for about five secs. the only problem is the first time it happens, it scares the crap out of you. oil and filter was changed two weeks ago, oil is right at the mark, if i remember, the sender was about $20.00 at the dodge boys. any ideas?

Yes, Tom is correct. It sounds very much like your idle is too low AND you need a new pressure sender (from Cummins).

Also, you might want to change the fuel filter and clean/replace the prefilter:

Very common problem to have the senders die - but dude, theres NOTHING at a Dodge Dealer that is $20 (not even the oil filters)

I Think That Is What They Charged Dealer Net, But Is The Cummins Unit A Better Deal? I'm Only 20 Minutes From Cummins Northeast.
