48re vs 47re

How much stronger is a stock 48re than a 47re? Will it hold 400 hp and 1000 tq? I believe all I need is 47re electrical internals to swap. I believe it’s the consensus that the 47re overdrive case was stronger. I don’t recall reading anything about input shaft differences.

I’m not messing with my truck until I have a transmission that will hold decent power.

I realize this is opinion in some ways, but appreciate the input in advance.

If you was to go to the gen that uses the 48re and ask them how much power it will hold you could get a answer faster.

Transmissions are almost identical, 48re is significantly stronger though due to it's much stronger & thicker geartrain, thicker sun shell and 6 pinion steel planetaries. The 48re geartrain is directly swappable into a 47re shell without too many issues, as long as it's clearanced properly. Additionally, you can get the 6 pinions steels for ~150 bucks and throw them in if you wanted.

Don't underestimate what a good valve body can do though. A good single disc + valve body in either would hold 400 hp without difficulty.

How does one test valve bodies? Probably an off-the-truck proposition?

I’m leaning towards rebuilding mine. A billet input sounds necessary if I want no fear.

I posed the question in the third gen section and have similar answers. Can any one confirm the 48re input shaft isn’t any better than a stock 47re?

As far as i'm aware the input shafts used between the two trucks are identical. Generally, I wouldn't bother with input shafts unless you're looking to move to a triple disc torque coverter, as the risk of breaking them is pretty minimal, especially in the ~400 hp range unless you're pulling absurd amounts or doing some racing. The valve bodies can be tested by doing a line pressure test via the ports on the side of your transmission with a pressure guage. should read 60 psi at idle and steadily move to ~140 psi at wot if your pressures havent been changed

As much as the power is detrimental to an input shaft how the power is applied can snap one like a dry twig billet or not.

The key to hold good power is having good line pressure ur going to need 80-90 psi in drive and 160-180 psi in lock wide open. Dont skip on buying a good valve body. And get a rebuild kit like goerend or dynamic. And run dexron 3 in it with a black bottle of lube graud. With a 3dic converter good rebuild kit good valve body billet input good flex plate should have no issues holding 500hp to the wheels with ur 47re
