5r110 or nv5600 for fun street truck

Newbie here, so first off hello. Not a dodge truck, but 2nd gen powered mutt.

I am building a light weight semi truck. Target of 8000lbs or less, 700hp, 1300ft/lb torque. 6bt ppump engine, aam 11.5 rear end, small kenworth day cab, custom built frame, custom built 4 link suspension, lo-pro 22.5s in front, supersingles in back. Obviously have to run 10 lug adaptors. I want a fun street truck that I can use on a drag strip, tow moderate loads, and daily drive. I am building the frame to handle anything a 1 ton p/u can.

The rear suspension is a mix of aam rear axle, trophy truck sized ballistic joints, and doubled up pro-mod mounting plates. 2 DOM 0.250 wall for the 4 links. The suspension is built to take anything I can throw at it. Right now it has 3.73s, not sure what ratio Ill use yet. The front is built up duramax independent suspension. I have designed it at 6 ride height and a solid front axle wouldnt allow me to get the truck low enough.

The 6bt came out of a low hour low mile freight liner, I traded a handgun for the engine so I think I did really good. I have installed a KDP blocker plate, and resealed a few gaskets. I will handle the performance parts once the truck is rolling. The engine did not come with its transmission adaptor plate. Im almost at the point where Im needing to decide what trans to use to mount the drivetrain in the frame.

I need to use my money as intelligently as possible, Id love to buy a sun coast built trans, but I cant spend that much on one item. I already have a good running complete diesel 5r110 trans/ecu/wiring harness that cost me basically nothing that Im considering using, or maybe buy a used nv5600. Running an auto vs a stick makes no difference to me, they both have their merits. Which do you guys would think would last longer and cost less? Considering I have no drivetrain parts besides an engine and my power goals. I drive like an a**hole so, Im gonna abuse this thing till an inch of its life.

If you want a fast truck stick with an automatic the 4r100 and 48RE are pretty much the best platform for a performance transmission. I like handshakers for towing myself, but someone with an auto and half the horsepower will spank you pretty easily.

I'd say the 48re for a auto and a zf6 for a manual trans.

What is needed upgrade wise for a 48re? The purchase price of a used trans has to be taken into account in this. $1000.00 is $1000.00.

If the 48re is that much better I'll go that route, but seeing as I have to buy a trans adaptor plate, flexplate, driveshaft, etc anyways; I am leaning towards the 5r110 I have. I do have a 5r110 with all electronics laying around already.

Is a Standalone Controller included in your electronics you have? A friend just put a 12v in a 2008 F450 and he had to use a Standalone Controller.

From everything I've read and with talking to diesel tuning companies; the better way to go is to use the factory ecu and wiring. A SCT tuner can alter shifting and make for a good running unit. I have to add a TPS, engine speed sensor, MAP, and coolant temp. But, those are needed with a standalone or factory. Those items are pretty cheap and very easy to add, but it does add up.

No, I do not have a SCT or standalone yet though. That is a very valid point. It seems like the 48re is gaining ground.

This is why I wanted to ask you guys, help me think of items that I haven't.

I'm using this Controller on my 47re Dodge Transmission | E-TransControl and it also works on the 48re. It needs nothing but the Controller to operate the trans.

Forget the nv5600 they are very costly to work on and the early version are almost impossiable to get parts for. (1.25 inch input shaft) A g56 is a better deal. A zf6 is a very good trans and they shift fast very good. My 05 has a re48 it went out at about 100,000 miles. After a rebiult and some updates this trans has over 200,000 with no trouble. (300,000 on truck) It pulls a gooseneck a lot. I would say it is a good trans.

For the 48RE you just need a stock Dodge adapter that can be found cheap, for the 5R110 your looking at the $900 neighborhood for a custom adapter.
For moderate towing with 700 hp you'd better have a set of compound turbo's in the plan.

I'd run what ya got, since you already have it. Agreed on the NV5600. I have one in mine, and I love it, but it ain't exactly sporty.
