OD housing cracked/exploded 100 miles after 47RH rebuild

I recently had my transmission rebuilt by a local shop in memphis (coleman taylor transmission). I have only driven the truck to work since the rebuild (4 weeks ago).

Last thursday on the way to work i was cruising on the interstate about 70MPH. I felt a light vibration and before i could take the cruise control off i heard a loud pop/bang of metalic noise (difficult to describe) followed by an intense vibration. Upon inspection after pulling over the overdrive housing had a crack from top top bottom where it mates to the main transmission case.

The shop has not called me back yet with a prognosis, but i briefly talked to the shop manager and he said something along the lines of "yeah this was probably a bad U-joint or motor mount". I am now worried by the tone in his voice that it won't be covered under warranty (2 year 24k miles).

1994 - Single cab - 3.55 gears - Stock 12Valve
270k miles

I will update the thread once the shop calls me back.

EDIT* it's difficult to see the crack, upload quality reduced on upload. It puked every ounce of fluid out once i pulled over.

A damaged u-joint, driveshaft, or other component is a likely suspect.

Although I feel the shop should of inspected those components... Many do not.

Did you feel any vibration beforehand?

Edit: NM I see the front driveshaft. A transfer case issue could be a culprit too.

Sorry i left that out. Indeed it is 4x4.

I had them service the transfer case and rear end as well when they did the rebuild. Additionally i told the guy to replace anything that looked "remotely" worn out because i planned on taking the truck cross country soon.

As you mentioned they should have inspected said parts, especially the U-joints since he would have had to put his hands on them.

Yeah that's a tough one. Without going through the motions to figure out what happened it's anyone's guess.

Did you feel any vibration at any speed after the rebuild?

I didnt notice any hint of vibration or irregularity after the rebuild. Drove great and didn't seem to function out of the ordinary.
Hopefully I will hear something tomorrow.

sounds like a way for them to avoid a rebuild on thier dime. many cars and trucks will go down the road for a while with very bad u joints along with bad vibration and you dont hear of them wiping out a transmission unless you were on the throttle and hauling a$$ then thats good reason to tear one up

07 6.7 QCSB 2500 deleted. Smarty jr, straight piped sold. 2001 SRW QCLB sold. currently have 94 rc 3500. auto/trans, #5 plate, 4k gov. spring, gauges. straight piped. adj.o/f valve. Timing @ 17.5 new 5x12s, 024 D.V. AFC Live, Plate removed.

Extremely unlikely an out-of-balance shaft or bad u-joint would cause that level of carnage. If it did, you would have been feeling all sorts of vibration. I suppose anything is possible but u-joints aren't really one of those things that are fine and then fail out of the blue.

'95 2500 ECLB 4x4, 334k and paused due to epic transformation in progress.

I had a 68 Chrysler that wasn’t making any noise to indicate a bad ujoint. Late to a dentist appointment, a foolish young man decided to push the envelope a little and the ujoint let go at 115 mph. The yoke was thrashing around hitting the tunnel like a ten pound hammer. Tailshaft of transmission was all torn up. Foolish, but lucky young man he was.

96 Ram 2500 4x4 automatic. Engine number: ??? Missing.

Also the shop could've swapped the overdrive unit from an re from a v8, they will interchange and it's a cheap way to do a rebuild, But there is a big difference in the internal of a v10 and diesel overdrive unit. Unless you check for yourself you may never know.

I never knew this until I was rebuilding the Jasper trans that came with my truck. Different clutch counts and a different backing plate if I remember correctly.
