NV4500 issue

Question for y'all. What are the symptoms of a failing NV4500 5th gear nut? My truck is a 1st gen with a NV4500 conversion. I was driving today and out of no where it started making a kind of metallic screeching sound. Then it went away and came back probably 15-20 times in about 8 miles. The trans has about 150k miles on it now. I haven't had a lick of trouble with it. I actually don't even know if there's anything wrong with it. I'm still trying to diagnose the noise. My first instinct was to consider that 5th gear nut. Is what I described a possibility for a nut issue?

Is it while driving? Idle? Get worse with throttle?

It was intermittent and only when driving. I actually figured it out last night......I'm an idiot. I park the truck during the winter. We got an early 14" dump of snow this past year. I put it in 4wd to pull it into the garage. I left the hubs locked and didn't realize it. I was driving around all day in 2wd with the hubs locked and it didn't like it. Like I said. I'm an idiot.

But that still leaves the question: what are symptoms of a failing 5th gear nut? My trans is all stock, so I assume the problem is still looming.

There are no symptoms. It just happens. You go to put it in fifth and it drops into fifth, but then theres nothing. Fifth becomes another neutral.
Lots of people leave hubs locked up all the time due to laziness. If theres a noise from that, then theres something wrong with your front driveline.

Mine let go at 70 MPH. Instant loss of thrust and engine revved because cruise was engaged when it went. No warning at all.

I've seen some trucks not engage into 5th because of the nut backing off....so if you can go into 5th I'd say your alright haha

Right. I'm saying the truck is still drivable with the hubs unlocked.
