Using a 98+ shifter bolts it to the cab and would make for a cleaner more hassle free instal, plus you get the better cup holders and shift pattern

^ I may be tempted to switch to the console setup when I can swing some downtime to fiddle with it.

Great write-up. I wish there was an entire kit available, minus the transmission, for those of us who don't have the fab skills. I haven't welded in almost 30 years. I just can't see myself spending the time to do this, but if I could snap my fingers and have a G56 in my truck right now, with exhaust brake, I would jump at the chance. There's zero chance I'll be fabbing crossmembers, etc. The only realistic option for me would be buying a complete truck with an NV5600 and simply swapping all necessary parts over.

I don't have any fab skills. I took my cross member to a welder, told him what I wanted and two days later handed him $40. I took my driveshaft to a driveshaft shop, told them what I wanted, went back a few days later and handed them several hundred dollars. The rest is bolt in the parts.
superbad7 likes this.

97 3500, 2 WD, G56, slightly bombed, 1.3 million miles with un-additized diesel fuel. Started the second million on 8/24/13
If you are lucky enough to be in Texas, you are lucky enough.

The 4wd part of the swap is something I wouldn't recommend trying to farm out. At least for me, there was far too much fitting and readjusting for it to be cost-effective. That was also without the challenge of trying to communicate what you think you need to another person who isn't in your garage under your truck.

If it's a 2wd swap, I would say go for it. I'm pretty confident in my updated dimensions for the crossmember, factoring some allowance for manufacturing inconsistencies.

You never mentioned the near impossible task of finding any of these transmissions without spending 5k because of dumb core charge....

I've seen plenty of NV4500's in the classifieds on this site since I put mine in. As you probably know, I got my whole swap from someone on this site. Thing is, when they are priced right, they dont stick around long so you have to check back daily and jump on the right deal.

G56's in working condition can be found for $3000

Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market is a nationwide junkyard search engine. If you know what machines the transmission came in you should find several for sale.

1997 3500 club cab 3.54 gears towing & camper pkg. Still stock with a built transmission at 120k. 4" exhaust, 4kgsk, and exhaust brake waiting for installation. 37337 upgrade. Still need ideas for improvements for hauling 15k fifth wheel.
