You can screw in the small screw on top of the box with the lock nut, it uses a allen wrench. It can buy you some time before having to buy a new one, just don't over tighten it.
Agreed, that's why I recommend checking everything else. In my experience, the steering box is usually the last thing to fool with, but many jump to the conclusion that taking the lash out will fix everything.
It doesn't, and overdoing it can make things worse, even ruin the box.
