a518 to manual swap (washington people!)

my a518 is giving up and im tired of towing with a non lockup auto. my tranny guy can build a really nice a518 for about $4k but at that price i don't think i want to deal with an automatic anymore/put that much money into this truck. i'm sure he is up to doing a manual swap but it's gonna be pricy and finding all the parts is going to take awhile.

background: this truck started as a manual getrag/gasser and the original owner swapped in an a518 with the cummins. w350 4x4 single cab with a flatbed.

from my research and understanding the hard part is done as there is already a hole blown out from the original manual tranny (my auto shifter is on the floor still where the stick used to be) and mounting for the clutch peddle etc.

i am in the the Cle Elum, washington area and work on the west side. is there anyone local-ish that has done this before and would be willing to offer some in person guidance/shop space here? i usually do all my own work, but travel full time in this rig (have a truck camper on the back) during the winter for work so extensive diy repairs are tough. with summer coming up i should have more time for something like this.
we drop our camper in cle elum during the summers so no camper on the back.

i can pay you (whether that's in cash or in beer), turn some wrenches etc. i'm not 100% clueless, but i also haven't tackled something like this before and would hate to get in to a deeper hole than i already am with this transmission.

thanks you in advance. any leads on a g360 or nv4500 for sale around the northwest is appreciated as well!

Good luck finding a 4x4 getrag or 4500 and transfercase (you need that too) in the PNW. I had been looking for a few years and never once saw what I needed for under 3k!!!!! I finally gave up and got a built 47rh trans delivered to my door and it was less than your trans guy quoted to build the 518.

You can use your getrag case is you use the advanced adapter like I did. Then you just need the nv4500

just food for thought, when i swapped a NV5600/NP271 into my 02 auto, i was around 4 grand getting the 5600/271 combo from a junk yard (this was also many years ago). that might be easier to find, the 5600 and 4500 share mounting locations, and you'll be alot happier with the 6 speed over a 5 speed. If you plan on keeping the truck for a long time, that's the route i would go. Or look into a G56 or ZF6 swap. the one thing that comes to mind that you would want to verify is fitment of the 271. the 271 is much larger then a 241 you'd normally see behind a 4500, and in my 02 it barely fit between the frame rails of the truck. just my 2 cents, i'd be willing to help but your on the wrong side of the state for me to offer much

and something else that just came to mind, that i don't know the answer to, are the 1st gens right hand or left hand drop? if they are right hand drops that getting a newer Tcase might be harder to achieve and the 271 is out of the question regardless. i don't think there are any right hand drop 271s

You can actually flip the 271, but you have to do a bit of modification to the oiling system so the bearings get lubed properly. I friend of mine is putting a ZF6/NP271 in his 1st Gen crewcab build and has actually done this. There is a bit of info about this mod on the internet if you search hard enough.

As a PNW'er myself... you buy a parts truck to do a manual swap. The $4k pricetag for a 'built' auto sets you a comfy budget for a donor. And you recoup at least half of it selling the extra cummins.

I'd build/swap a left-drop diff housing before I flipped a 271. A wider track and high pinion would be nice. More room for exhaust routing too.

Nothing to it but to do it. hardest part is going to be aligning the clutch, which isn't really that hard in the first place. everything is else is basically bolt in, bolt out
