Buying "Tricks"

I sold my 1st gen about a year ago but thinking of getting another (Love those trucks!!). One potential buyer pulled oil filler cap off and felt for pressure/blowby then put his ear to filler to listen for "squeaks" he said that would be caused by main bearing. First I've heard of those "tricks". Anyone know of any good buying "tricks" to test out motor, trans,...?

[SOLD] 1993 W250 5sp, M&H fuel pin, 366 spring, timing spacer, 4" Diamond Eye exhaust, 2 1/2" Alcan Leveling Springs, Borgenson steering shaft, redhead steering box, 100hp injectors, 16cm turbo housing, gauges...

Hope his ear was close enough to get a bit of lube to remove the squeaks from his head. BS!

Not total bs, it the bearing is going out in the vacuum pump Iíve heard it squeak out of the tube but silent when itís closed. As for hearing main bearings...... if theyíre bad enough to squeak your gunna hear noises with the cap on or off that part is 100 percent bs.

FWIW, this one truck of mine has an interesting noise coming from the oil filler. I've swapped the vacuum pump to the newer style, and the noise is unchanged.

Interesting..... maybe the kdp fell out? It sounds exactly like my friends truck when it lunched the bearing in the vac pump. Noise went away with upgrading to the new style vane pump.

Best "trick" I know is a $10 mechanics stethoscope. Works better than the old screwdriver to the ear trick.

1995 3500; pacbrake exhaust flange, 4" exhaust; turbo booster elbow; pan-off trans kit with towing valve body and deep alum pan; alum (add fluid) rear end cover. All factory extras except leather.
