i'm in the middle of doing that now. it is a lot of work, for sure. my old '89w250 was rusted to pieces so i bought a 2wd d250 in arizona and completely tore it down, cut out the 2wd stuff, sandblasted everything, por15'd all the parts and bolted stuff back together using flange head, grade 8 nuts and bolts taking measurements off the old frame to know where the x-members go. rebuilt the diffs, transmission, engine (it only had 400k+ miles) new everything to do with the brakes, new hubs, leaf springs and on and on. i'm ready to put the drive train into the frame now and then start on the body, thinking it has to get taken down to bare metal for new paint. going to put some sound deadener in the cab too. before you needed to wear earmuffs to safeguard your hearing and some kind of eyeball restraints to keep them from rattling outta your skull.
so what i'm going to end up with is an OLD truck that won't be worth half the money I've spent on it... but it'll be a great old truck
