kdp missing
I took everything apart to do my kdp and its not there. Gone! I have only had this truck a few weeks so have no idea when it came out or what happened! ( I should've posted this in Powertrain sorry! )

either somone removed it, or you got real lucky and it fell out and didnt destroy everything and its laying in the bottom of the oil pan.

Chris is right on for that one. While you have it apart you might consider replacing the missing component and tabbing it.

So the plot thickens... As I was cleaning and prepping the gear housing cover I noticed a bulge where the pin came out and must've gotten lodged in the cover. This bulge is just about below where the right speed sensor mounting stud would be and looks like the KDP was carried along the top of the lower large gear until it lodged in the corner of the housing.

Here is the hole where the KDP would've been. It came out and travelled to the left along the lower gear ( if I had taken the picture of it) would be like an inch below.

Outside of cover.

Inside of cover.

Another pic of the inside of the cover, showing the whole thing.

Although I was pretty disappointed it had came out already, at least I know it won't do any damage wherever in the engine it is. ( I hope...) Like I said having owned the truck for two weeks I wanted to be proactive and get the KDP tackled right away. I guess now I wonder could it have caused a catastrophe in the past and the engine fixed? Hopefully it just got stuck in the cover and found its way to the bottom of the sump.

Its in the bottom of the pan most likely. Now if it were me, id take a magnent, and try to lead the pin to the front of the oil pan and try to get it out that way. Then get a new one, smack er in, tab it, and GO! Also make SURE to pull every bolt out that holds the cover on and clean the threads and lock tight them. Otherwise yours will look like mine...luckily i had 0 damage done..

I already put it back together w/o the pin. Isn't it just for assembly purposes for locating the housing to the block?

tdanielson95 11-27-2015 03:25 PM

No, it is for alignment purposes of the case to the block. I would highly suggest to put one in. Like dowel pins on transmission housing of so fourth.

Guards Red 11-27-2015 03:55 PM

Ok, I'll put that on the list for a future project. I'll have to do some searching as to where I can get a pin. Thanks.

Go right to cummins with your engine serial number. I think its like 2 or 3 bucks last time i bought one.

tdanielson95 11-27-2015 04:31 PM

Dodge dealer might get it too with the last 8 of the vin

Guards Red 11-27-2015 04:39 PM

As far as it being for alignment purposes- Aren't the five bolts in the gear case doing just that? Does the KDP do something that the bolts do not? Just wondering... I am new so still learning all this!

Bolt holes are sloppy. A 1/2" bolt hole (in the cover) might be .56". Bolts fit through holes easily for assembly purposes. The part might be put together off a hair which in many applications does not matter.

However, a 1/2" pin fits into a .50" or perhaps even a .4975" hole (press fit). It is snug so everything is precisely aligned. Improper alignment can place your injection pump in a close, but wrong position.
