speedometer problem

I can't get my speedo to work. It is a 91 Dodge 350 w/ Cummins &4 speed auto. I have changed the VSS (twice) and replaced the small gears in the speedo head, even tried a used head borrowed from a friend, no help. I also paid $200 to have the computer repaired. What voltage should I find at the VSS plug? At the head? Anything else I can do?

Did you hook the transfer case side to a drill and see if you have anything ? Trace your wiring down also .After all it's a 20+ yr old truck it could have a bad wire .

I will check the wiring and make sure the VSS is turning. Does anyone know what voltage this system works on? Does the signal feed through the computer?

This not to say that anyone else will have this problem but when my speedo quit working I had a different fix. The vent tube for my transfer case was very close to the wiring for the VSS it had been laying (or bouncing) on the wires for who knows how long. I cleaned all the oil, dirt, wrapping, etc. off and found there was only one strand of the stranded wire still intact. The fix, cut the wire put in a connector and back in business. Oh and relocate the vent tube line!

is the truck a 4x4 first off? if so, make sure the ratio adapter on the transfer case isn't bad. take it off, turn one side by hand, other side should turn as well.

pull the gear drive out of the t-case and make sure it's not chewed up. you have 3 things to check at the t-case, gear drive, ratio adapter, and VSS.

also, as grey wolf mentioned, check all of your wiring. mine was rubbing on the yoke and had stripped down to a couple strands by the time I found it. wire loom and zip ties are your friend under there.

My speedo was intermittent in my truck. Everything on the truck was good, the fix was a different speedo from another truck. Hasn't skipped a beat since.
