No. Multimeter will work on dc volts but a test light is easier to see a light go out. Unless you used jumper wires from inside the cab to the battery

a test light is just that...a light, with two probes like a meter...and no dumb questions...we all had to learn and many still are.

New 1st gen Owner

Hey ya'll, I've been a member here for awhile now with my 3rd gen Cummins, but I just bought my first 1st gen, and I'm looking forward to getting into the 12valve world. I have been keeping my eye out for a 5spd 4wd 1st gen for awhile now, and they're getting harder and harder to come by, in decent shape. Finally found this one up in Alaska with 100k miles, so I jumped on it and paid for it to be shipped down to a port in Washington, so I can drive it home in a few weeks. I can't wait to get it home and check it all out!

Thanks for the post. This has helped answer a TON of questions I had.

I'm about to inherit an '89 1st Gen RWD that has spent its life in the south. I will be digging around this forum and learning the ins and outs, but wanted to ask a few initial questions. When my brother inherited the truck in ~2001 it had less than 30k original miles on it my grandfather put on it. I'm sure it has over 100k now, and I think it's been maintained at an "ok" level. So will be going through it when I get it and hope the engine is still in great shape.

The wiring harness needs rebuilt/replaced. I have no problem building a new one myself (as an electrical engineer who built control panels for years). But I didn't find a wiring diagram on here in initial searches.

I'm going to need a windshield and a taillight. I saw some taillights on eBay. any ideas on a windshield? Will the regular replacement shops have them?

I'd like to "upgrade" the 3 speed to something "better". I remember as a kid this thing would really wind out on the interstate, so I feel like I'm going to want to upgrade to a 4 or 5 speed auto or even a manual. Initial forum searches didn't find anything on that either.

Last question. I'd like to change over the rear suspension to a 3 or 4 link and put air springs all the way around... I know. please don't throw things at me... please. Any thoughts here on that? I have a set of air springs in the garage just waiting for the right project.

I would recommend starting a dedicated thread about your truck and ask your question in there.....much easier for us to help and keep track of your progress.

A gear swap would be better than a 4 or 5 speed on dropping rpms. There won’t be much difference in output ratio between the 3 different transmissions to make any difference unless a 5 speed had overdrive
