vacuum pump ?

i'm looking to replace the bottom unit on my 90 rig. have the new pump & was ready to install but looks like a mother to replace on truck. can i remove the power steering unit without messing things up in the gear case? pretty much take off & reinstall the unit with no issues?
i just did the kdp & housing bolts, couldn't do the pump at the time.

Remove the vacuum pump/power steering pump the engine as an assembly. The power steering pump cannot be removed from the vacuum pump without first unbolting the whole assembly from the timing case. However, since you are just replacing the one bottom pod you can do that without removing the power steering pump with the whole assembly on the bench. You dont want to have to remove the power steering pump from the vacuum pump unless you are rebuilding the vacuum pump or replacing the power steering pump, you have to go through a certain procedure and it is a bit of a bear to separate the two.

Ok, right I can remove the assembly as 1 piece. I don't need to take power steering apart. I can just pull it out of the timing case & replace vac . pump correct? I'm just worried about lining up gears when reassemble.

Yup there is no timing for the vacuum pump gear to the rest of the timing gears. No way to put it back together and not have the gears meshed right.

ok im finally getting around to doing my pump replacement. how does one get the bottom bolt out behind the power steering resi? looks like fun.
tried a 15mm swivel & barely room to turn ractchet. no room to fit a wrench in there like the top bolt.

any pointers much appreciated,

You only need to remove the two bolts at the timing cover and undo 3 hoses to remove the unit as an assembly which then can easily be repaired on a workbench.

How to service your vacuum pump

What happens when your vacuum pump stops working. - Dodge Diesel - Diesel Truck Resource Forums

It is easiest to remove the mounting bolts from the timing case using a "C" wrench,

Get yourself a set of them, they are needed if you ever remove your injection pump.

You can get a good set from Sears or a throwaway set from Harbor Freight.

Note**
A "C" wrench is also commonly known as a Manifold Wrench.

When I took mine off, the top bolt of course is out in the open. On the bottom one though I found a normal shallow socket with a wobble extension worked perfectly.

I just replaced both pods on mine yesterday with it all on the truck. Took about hour and a half. Used a 10mm ratcheting wrench. Was the first time my truck had power brakes since I've owned it! Pretty fancy stuff!
