Transfer case/front end drive train question.

Need some help. Have 2012 2500 slt 6.7 4x4. Getting a vibration and slight growl under the driver's side floorboard. Checked all u- joints an they are good. The one thing I have noticed is the front driveshaft is spinning while not in 4 wheel drive. I thought that it is not supposed to do that or am I wrong? I will take any suggestion.

Thanks everyone.

By growl, do you mean sounding like a skateboard on asphalt?

On a 2012 the front drive shaft turns all the time!!! you could pull the front drive shaft to eliminate it or it could be a wheel bearing or axle u joint.

SRich is right. The front driveshaft is always turning on that model. The front axles are disengaged until you put it in 4x4, then a motor engages them. The u joints on those front axles are bad about going out. The growl noise makes me lean more towards a bad wheel bearing. You can see the axle u joint with the wheel off or laying down on a creeper with the tire turned. I mainly see the needle bearings fall out of the caps. Gotta get the wheel hub off to take the shaft out so you could check them both at the same time.

No, not on the 2012 model like the OP has.

There is no disconnect whatsoever for the front axles on that one, it is pre-cad.

The driveshaft is always turning when your moving, but that is because the front axle is dragging it along for the ride.

If your double cardin joint hasn't been greased your centering yoke could be ready to seize. The centering yoke is supposed to be greased every 7500 miles.

Oops. You’re right about that. Either way everything else is still accurate.

That’s true. I think they recommend greasing it at every oil change.
