Replacing VGT Turbo

2013 Ram, 3500, 6.7L, Auto, 4x4, Megacab, 130K miles. All stock.

Truck has been throwing code u010C off and on for a couple weeks but was still building up to 29psi boost up until a couple days ago. A couple days ago when driving home truck had a noticeable decrease in power and was running rough. Pulled codes when I got home and found: P003A, P00AF, P2262. After research, it looks like a new turbo is in order. My questions for those in the know are this:

Can I pull the turbo without pulling the exhaust manifold on the 2013? Not finding much info on 2013+ turbo removal, lots of info for pre 2012, but they have a different turbo too, but consensus on those is to pull the manifold with turbo attached...sounds like a heavy booger.

Any experience with the Rotomaster Reman from thoroughbred or vivid racing? Vivid has the reman turbo for $1620 and the core charge is only $275. So I can have a drop in replacement to my door for right at $2k. I am thinking of doing this and just keeping the old turbo to rebuild so i have a spare. I am not interested in trying to get more power so I am fine with the stock turbo. I may even trade in the truck on something new or lower miles once I have it running right.

Is there anything else I should do when changing the turbo? Clean EGR Cooler, etc?

What other gaskets, seals, hoses, etc will I need or should I replace when I do this.

Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

So I was able to get everything loose, I was kind of amaze that all four turbo nuts came loose with just a standard 15mm wrench, took a little reefing, but not bad at all. I did spray them with PB Blaster and let them soak for a couple hours. Problem now is not enough room beneath the turbo for the studs to clear the bottom of the manifold. Going to try lifting the engine with a floor jack later today, I need about 3/4" is all.

I am thinking about going with a Fleece Cheetah or BD Screamer over a stock reman unit. I have read lots on here and other sites, but one site, says that aftermarket tuning and exhaust is required for the Fleece Cheetah, even though it says stock drop in replacement. Does anyone know if both of these turbos are totally fine with a bone stock truck?

Thanks,

Thats why almost everyone takes the manifold off.

If or when i ever have to replace mine, I would go with the Fleece cheetah but the BD looks nice to.

So I worked on it some more today, got the turbo fully disconnected and all oil & coolant lines removed from it. Two 10mm bolts on the bottom that attach the oil drain are a pane in the butt...10mm wobly socket on a 24" extension was the ticket. Loosened the motor mount and jacked the engine up about an inch and still can not get quite enough room to get the turbo out. I'll be pulling the manifold and EGR cooler out of the way tonight. I would sure like to see a video of someone doing this following the instructions I found online that say nothing about removing the manifold. I'm sure it can be done, but I sure as heck can't figure out how. Removing the manifold should make the install much easier. I'm sure a lift would help some with the access issues as well.

Thank you for the input on selecting Fleece over BD. I am curious why you guys would choose to go with Fleece though.

Also, are both of these turbos ok with stock exhaust and stock tuning?

Thanks,

If you remove the VGT and replace with another turbo that isn’t stock you’ll need to tune to get it right.

To tune you’ll need to delete the emissions equip which is at a minimum some exhaust work to remove the SCR and DPF or DPF (pre 13).

Hope this helps (since you left no info on what your truck is set up for)

My truck is already fully deleted with a tune. I’m just getting a couple codes after I installed my non vgt turbo. 2228 and 1193. I cleared the DTC with my tuner. Just wondering if this was enough to get rid of the codes? Didn’t know if these codes had something to do with the vgt not being plugged in?

Im trying to figure out turbos, and I keep coming back to this link. Have you used this set up?
Is it a direct fit up to replace the factory vgt and get rid of the exhaust brake or do you need more parts besides the new tunes to match the new set up?

I thought about using the BMP 366 but I went with a BD IH sxe/ebrake instead and I love it. Craig
