Car audio amps and alternator discussion

Hello all. Wanted to start a discussion about car audio. I have pioneer door speakers running off a pioneer 4 channel amp running 100w rms at 4ohms and 2 American Bass xd10 dual 4 ohm vc wired to 1 ohm on a Kicker CXA1200.1 amp. One of my buddies is big into car audio and is telling me I'm not going to get more then 500watts with the stock electrical system. Is he full of bs? I have a 0ga wire from the passenger battery run under the truck, comes up through the floor behind the rear seat and splits into 4ga wire. One to each amp. And a 200A breaker 6" from the battery.

Good question lol, I’m getting ready to go down this road for the first time. Something different then power train and drivetrain. I know a lot guys on here have nice setups just doesn’t get talked about the details too often. Because you’re automatically a young punk if you have a system lol I’m old enough to be a lot of these guys dad but I still like my music loud! Good luck

What alternator are you running? I will promise you a normal 180 wont support 1200 especially with 20 or so of cabling you have.

I had a mopar 220A but it burned up last fall so had to put the stock alt back on. Theres about 15' of 0ga wire. Found a company in Arizona that has a 250A for 300. Or could go big with a mechman 240A unit for 400. Also running 4 led fog lights at night, and have a 13K winch that I use on occasion. Of course the music will be turned way down before I use it. Also have an 8 led bulb stove light kit that's used in conjunction with the winch. The winch has been bogging down a good bit this winter. Use it to pull cars/trucks out of the ditch when it snows bad.

Can't chime in to much on this, as i am by all means a car audio Novice However, @Andrewme When i was doing my sub upgrade i consulted a buddy of mine who had over 10 years of car audio experience as an installer and designer. I considered running the power wire under the truck and he immediately told me to never do that Even high quality marine grade power wires will eventually wear and cause issues. In your issues i would either look into some heavy duty loom to protect your power wire and prevent a future electrical hazard, or re-route the power wire entirely.

I used pure copper oxygen free welding cable. And is zip tied above the frame. I learned my lesson after having to replace all the wires for my fog lights and rear camera wire from corrosion.

From my install last week. It's crazy messy still. Need a bit warmer weather to tidy everything up.

Id recommend the highest alternator you can. A 180 wont hold a candle to a 750 watt amp running higher in the load range. Unless your truck is charging a strong 14.4+ it wont power the amp appropriately. I recommend jumping up the amperage and you should be fine even if your stored voltage drops once youve turned on your fogs and headlights.

Another quality piece of hardware that can somewhat prevent big fluctuations (your Amps worst nightmare) is a capacitor. It will hold power for those big hits and prevent the trucks voltage from dropping drastically. Theyre rather cheap and could make it feasible to use a 300 amp alternator vs a 400. Crutchfield has many options.

Okay. I may step up to the mechman 320A and upgrade all the power and ground wires. The fog lights only pull about 5 amps per pair. And their only used at night which I dont seem to be doing much night time driving in it anymore. And it doesnt even get dark until around 10pm or later during the summer here

While corrosion may be its own problem, I believe that what the other poster is referring to is an eventual fire hazard due to the wire insulation wearing down against the truck frame/body at contact points. While I happen top believe that running power wires under the truck is OK, I also do believe in running hime either in flex conduit or corrugated wire loom for added safety. Of course, ir also needs to be properly fused at the battery end of things.

Here is a GREAT link to help you figure out wire sizes etc , as well as provide excellent basic wiring information--

I used a 200A breaker type fuse about 6" from the batter. I should add a fuse after the 0ga splits into 2 4ga wires but theres not much room to add one.
