Looking to get another Ram Diesel, need Auto trans advice pls.

Hi everyone. So I'm looking to get another Dodge diesel, but a lot has changed since I owned my last one. Lemme give you a little back story. I started with a '91 regular cab long bed 4x4 with a straight drive 5spd. I put the Banks power pack on it and loved it. After that I upgraded to a '96 extra cab long bed 4x4 with the Banks power pack and an automatic trans. That's where the nightmare started, with the auto. I had more trouble with that damn auto trans than you can imagine. After having it rebuilt by some outfit in Denver and spending a bucket load of $$$ on it, it finally shifted and towed great. I don't want to go through that again.

The truck I'm looking to get is going to be a 4 door Cummins, don't care if it's 2 wheel or 4 wheel (I'm going to use it to tow my camper). I want an auto though. I've been told by a few people that the auto trans issue has been solved, but nobody has been able to tell me exactly when the issue was fixed, how they fixed it, or anything for that matter. Also, I just learned that they upped the displacement from 5.9 to 6.7. When did that happen? Also, what kind of benefits come with the 6.7, other than the obvious displacement.

Again, I really appreciate any advice you can give me. I've used forums before when a mustang fell into my possession and the info I got from those members was priceless. Thanks to anyone who replies.

6.7 has the better automatic in stock form, 6 speed electronically controlled versus 4 speed hydraulic.

6.7 came out mid-year 07.

The entire reason (well, a major reason) the Dodge automatic has such a bad reputation is because guys did just like you did, turned up the power and were pissed when the trans died. Yes, the converter leaves a lot to be desired, and some other parts were cheaped out, but that's the way it is with OEM.

The downside to the 6.7 is all the emissions crap on them, there are some reliability issues and mileage is dropped. Most of that has been remedied from 09+, especially 10+, except mileage still stinks.

Then with the 13/14, SCR has been implemented and the mileage is back, not quit to where it was but definitely better than 07-12 6.7's.

Thanks for the info. So would a better option be to go with an '07 5.9 for mileage? Do they have the better trans? BTW, the auto on my '96 crapped out on me before I installed the Banks power pack. I had it rebuilt by some outfit in Denver and while that was being done is when I installed the power pack.
