Where to buy new engine - cause I am stupid and blew mine up

1st time diesel owner (2005 dodge 3500 6sp manuel, larime) and my mechanic tells me that I need a new engine installed at a tune of $16K !!

I bought this truck for $17K off ebay back in April 2013. Its been in the shop ever since. Replaced HP Fuel Pump...then Injector 2 and 3. Then it blew a turbo about 30 miles from home. Took it to the nearest diesel shop...they sold me a new turbo at ~$3K installed and then told me the engine is not holding pressure or something and that I need a new engine. They tell me they can put one in for $16K. I don't have that kind of cash so they towed it to my house...where it sits.
I have a bad feeling that this may have been my fault. The oil pressure needle was dropping and posting a warning. Put in 3 liters first. Error msg went away but dip stick still showed low. Put in another 3 liters. Was running good for a day or two then the blow out.

Two questions:
1. Where is a good place to price out and buy a new cummins engine ?
2. is $16K really what it should cost?

CUMMINS LONG BLOCK CRATE ENGINE

Wow, $16k better not be a stock rebuild.

Where are you located and have you thought about trying a different shop. I think we charge ~$6500

Hi. I am in Tucson AZ. I am going to try a different shop. I am researching now. I thought 16K was a lot also. They told me the engine would cost about $7K...so I am not sure where they came up with the other 9K.
Are you saying it should only cost me about $7K for the engine and labor?

If you go to the Az page make a thread there it might help a bit more on local Tucson shops

Avery's Automotive. I went there only because the truck broke down 4 miles from them. I usually go to JJs automotive. JJs has always been good to me so I am going to see if they can help.

It all seems a little fishy. The engine would turn over prior to bring it in. And they told me that it was blowing smoke real bad when they were working on it. Now since I told them I cant come up with 16K that they put it all back together but it does not run or turn over. ugh..

As for cutting my losses and sell...I have considered that...but I have about 20K in it. I bought this diesel because everyone was telling me they last forever. I don't mind dumping another 7K if that gives it new life. Also, who is going to buy a broke down truck like this lol

I will post to the az thread also as recommended. Thanks!

16k is around the right ballpark for a turn-key replacement direct from cummins

But...

Any diesel shop should be able to either rebuild yours or source a rebuild short/long block and have the thing back on the road for half of that

Sounds like its time you take your truck elsewhere...

again, sounds like its time to have someone else look at it

But, chances are if you ran it with no oil, (literally no oil of it wasnt making oil pressure!) then chances are their isnt alot of the engine that is salvageable, best off to buy a used or rebuilt long block and they can take your old engine for core
