48re stuck in 3rd & no gear indication on dash

So, just moved to Germany. Shipped the truck from Seattle in April and just picked it up today in Schweinfurt Germany. Received truck with 1/4 tank just as I shipped it, and drove it to a gas station. No problems on that short drive to the gas station. But after filling up....well read on below.....

At the pump cranked the truck and immediately noticed the dash did not show any indication of a gear selection. Following my buddy through unfamiliar and weird streets I noticed the truck was very sluggish. Later learned that the truck would start off in 3rd gear and no shifting or TC lockup at all. My buddy who took me up there googled it on his smart phone and we figured the trans was in limp mode. Cycled the key on-off-on three times to run the on board diagnostic and did not pull any codes. No CEL. I don't have a code reader on me. Crawled under the truck and fiddled with the wires and plugs a little, checked fluids and all were clean and smelled fine (have changed the fluid recently).

Ended up having to drive the truck 2hrs to my new home stuck in 3rd on the Autobahn!!! Talk about being passed like you were going backwards!!!

On base we have a really nice DIY garage with car lifts and almost any tool you might need hopefully to include a code reader. So that's my resources for now until all my household goods show up and then I'll have all my own tools.

Well anyways....Im stuck like chuck here. Need some help from you genius' on here. Any advice?

PS: this was my first experience on the Germany autobahn and let me tell you driving 60mph at 2800rpm with cars blowing by at 100+mph sucks!!

Check fuses. One time mine did that and all it was was a fuse.
if that is not it, disconnect the batteries and let sit for about a half an hour or so and connect again. One time my tranny got too hot trying to get unstuck from a muddy mess and went into limp mode. This will reset it and should come out of limp. Then you might be able to cycle the key and see if there are any other codes

Good Luck!

checking fuses (#5 and #50) along with the transmission relay #59. Fuses were good and the relay was good, but just for giggles, I decided to take the man's recommendation and jumper that relay which, in essence, bypasses the PCM. Low and Behold!!! Everything came back to life!!! I have power to the coil of that relay (pin #86) so it must be the ground going back at the PCM.

I traced mine back along the ground wire going to the pcm. I found that I have an open ground inside the pcm.
I just cut that ground wire between the relay box and the pcm ground, taped up the pcm end and ran the relay end to the pass. side battery negative terminal. Been working fine for the last 30K+ miles but I probably should replace the pcm and associated harness eventually.
Quoted from someone on another forum..
All my fuses were good, swapped trans relay and still no fix. Will attempt this fix above when I get a chance. until then, im still looking for more suggestions...thanks in advance.

does your truck have any performance up-grades when my tranny did this to me it was because it was stock with my smarty all turned up. went into limp mode tried codes and such and ended up just leaving my batteries unplugged for bout a half hour hoped back in and it was good except I had to readjust my second gear band back into adjustment, as far as the dash indicator lights my smarty also caused all the indicators to go away and even my tow haul and o/d off lights not to work but the transmission still acted fine just didn't have any lights. don't know if this helped any but I thought it might be worth throwing my 2 cents in. good luck

I just updated my signature line to show that my truck is completely bone stock. No programmer, no chip....I have always been pleased with its performance as is. Its just a 2WD so....I don't take it out and thrash it in the sand or mud, hell, this truck gets stuck in wet grass.

Maybe it'll just start working this morning on my way to work.....yea right...

Do you have very little to no low end power? And, once you get going its "ok on the highway" (with the exception of staying in 3rd)
Could be the TC. I just went through similar and had the guys at ATS do me up nice.
86k on tranny...TQ and Tranny was stock but trashed.

Starting out in 3rd feels a bit sluggish, but it should feel sluggish....actually, surprisingly impressive for a standing 3rd gear start. But, if you shift into reverse, then shift to 1st, it'll go into 1st. Starting in 1st gear and then manually shifting 1-2-3 seems to be normal.

I think its an electrical issue. I think the TCM is not getting power, or is burned up. That's my guess. I don't think its the mechanical tranny parts, because it was fine when I dropped it off for shipment in April, and then when I picked it up and drove it to the gas station it drove just fine. Then after I filled up and cranked it up, its been this way ever since.

48re stuck in 3rd & no gear indication on dash

I found the fix for it. Took me a little while with a few crosseyed stares at the wiring diagrams which ultimately ended up confusing me even more. But to make a long story short....<br />
<br />
My transmission control relay would not energize. Just like the guy I quoted from another forum, my PCM was not providing a ground to the trans control relay (Pin #85). Pin #86 is a switched positive current provided by fuse #50 and it was good. So, I did the same thing the other guy did and I cut the wire from the PCM that is supposed to provide a negative to the relay. I taped up the wire from the PCM and the other end I grounded permanently to a body ground. <br />
<br />
WHALA....To test it out I rocked the relay back and forth on the contacts with the key in the run position and it started clicking again. Started the truck and put it in drive and the indication started showing up again. Test drove and its all back to normal. <br />
<br />
So lesson learned. My PCM is not the first failure to provide a ground to the trans control relay. I hope this helps others that might have this problem. If any one needs step by step detailed instructions let me know. I can tell where the wires are and how I found the connector.

<div style="font-style:italic">Sounds like solenoids were inactive long enough to stick. Lucky to get free up. Good job.</div>

</td>

</table>
</div>Yup....all of the solenoids in the TRS assembly (aka trans solenoid assembly) worked just fine when the relay finally kicked on (maybe the semi-fresh fluids helped). <br />
<br />
I drove the truck for about 600 miles or so like that in limp mode. I was afraid that every mile I drove was possibly causing extra wear on the tranny, but so far everything seems back to normal. My trans is bone stock and has never had a mechanical failure...only other problem was a governor transducer failure. Its got 172,xxx miles on it now...I wouldn't think it has too many miles left on it so if driving in limp mode exponentially caused extra wear I think my tranny would be toast.
