2004.5 Dually With Blown Engine.....

Guys - I'm considering swapping my 1994 2500 4x4 for a friends 2004.5 4x4 crew cab dually with the six speed manual trans. I would have to throw in additional cash to close the deal. The 2004.5 has a giant hole in the block at #4. The rod is no longer on the crank. Truck has ~170K miles and never towed hard.

Is there an issue with the ISB 325's? Seems odd to me that he did not get a low perssure or overheat alarm. Just heard a clicking noise and then boom.

What's a beautiful 2004.5 crew cab 4x4 dually with a blown engine worth - he's asking 12K...? I plan on doing the engine work myself. Should I go for a 6.7 transplant?

Walk away??? Or go for it?.......... I'm in California so the 2004 requires smogging......

Give you and idea, I bought my truck for 15k with only 119,000 miles on it. So a blown engine for 12k might be a little high and you can add on 5000+ for a rebuilt engine, since that one is toast.

Close to here there was a 2003 White Sport QC NV5600 6 speed, 4x4 dually with 93000 miles that the fellow was asking $16,000 for. Clean but needed a tail gate, bumper and right dually fender extension because it rolled down the fellows steep driveway and into some trees. On the plus side he was an avid diesel guy and had just done the ball joints, unit bearings and steering upgrade.
I would walk as $12K Is way too much with a blown engine. Well for the swap thing it's too hard to judge without seeing both the trucks.

Too much. You're looking at at least 5k for a junkyard pullout

I just bought my 05 with a blown motor. Truck has 152k on it. Good take out motor cost me close to 6k. Got that done and found the starter bad, multiple coolant and tranny line leaks and a blown tranny. I paid 10k for the truck and have close to 12k into bringing it back to life. Buyer beware, it can hurt the wallet.

2005 Ram 2500 Quad Cab Short Bed 4X4 Stock Engine Full built tranny, billet input shaft, trip disc converter, modified shift kit, TV bore and hone kit. Banks Monster duals. Tripple pod pillar guages - pyro, boost, trans. Dual steering pod - lift pump, rail press.

comsidering a hemi (gasser) truck of that particular vintage would go for 11-13K and it would run, I'd be hard pressed to to give him anything over 7k.
Just forget the fact it WAS a diesel. Right now it's a rolling chassis with a 1k lb paperweight between the front tires.
7k for the truck-7k for a descent engine (can't even rebuild a ventilated block) 14k so farand we haven't even looked at labor/time for the install+who knows what else once you get it running.
BTW, so far as what he told you "Just heard a clicking noise and then boom." I kinda doubt that.
I've seen washed down cylinders, low/no oil pressure, bad injectors, etc. there are only a couple a things that'll hole a block.
A "clicking" noise then boom isn't one of 'em!
Usually it sounds like someone beating the h--l out of a 55 gallon drum with a sledgehammer then boom!

My 03 just started ticking and about 10 seconds later went boom and I saw the rod and part of the cam and block bouncing down the road in my mirror. No warning...

I had just enough time to turn the radio down and go "what the hell is that?" before it hit the fan. Story doesn't seem far fetched.

Thanks guys. I walked away. Sticking with my 1994 12 valve. It rides like a covered wagon, but I don't have to take it to the smog police in California and it has never let me down. I was dreamin' about the nice spacious leather interior of that 2004.5. But you guys set me straight. Thank you.....

I'll spend some $ on my 1994 to make it nicer instead - paint and install air conditioning.

Cheers,

Craig

You can always look into dropping a newer leather interior in your truck while you are at it.
