Manual to Auto Swap questions

Guys, I currently have a 07 QCLB 4x4 with a G56 with a South Bend 3250 clutch. I run my smarty on TNT #5 and the truck runs great honestly. The truck is pretty well stock. upgraded air filter and removed muffler, that is about it.

I've been considering an auto swap to a 48RE. My wife can't drive my truck and I have moved into town so stop and go traffic isn't nearly as fun as it used to be. To top it off, I have sold my RV and honestly don't have anything to tow right now other than a 14ft boat.

I've considered finding someone to swap out transmissions with someone but I wanted to make sure I had the upgraded parts to be able to run my truck close to where it is currently set.

I have the stock clutch that I can swap out or include the 3250 for some extra cash or parts. My truck has 84k miles on it now and I'm the original owner. I work from home so the miles on the tranny are almost all interstate miles from when I lived away from my wife and was traveling back and forth to see her.

What do I need to have sitting in the garage before I do the swap? Do I need an upgraded flex plate? Can I get away with running a stock trans for a while until it needs rebuilt or do I need to go ahead and try to find a transmission with a valve body and torque converter.

I'm not looking forward to spending 3-4k on a swap with parts up front. I'm willing to drive it a while and then rebuild a transmission but I thought I'd see what the best bet would be for stockpiling parts before a swap.

I have a factory clutch that isn't burnt up with only 20k miles on it and hydraulics too. I also have the stock 3 piece drive shaft that needs u-joints and a 1 piece aluminum drive shaft that has been in the truck for less than a year. I am currently running a 3250 SBC DD with the upgraded hydraulics and all.

I'm willing to swap out stock for stock if that is what it comes down to. That means stock clutch, stock hydraulics, transmission and 3pc drive shaft (I'll put in joints) if the other party doesn't have the 1 piece aluminum.

If the swap transmission has something added to it, then I can add in parts too but if it is a bone stock setup, I will want to recover some cash from the $2400 in upgraded pieces that I put on my truck. I think this is pretty fair

What do you guys think? Reasonable proposition or is this out in left field?

What should I start trying to purchase prior to getting more serious about this ordeal? Obviously the more I need to get, the longer I will have to wait before the swap but I wanted to start researching prior to committing.

Thanks for the help guys and I appreciate all the information I get.

Thanks,
Chris

I just finished swapping from a 48re to an NV5600 in my 2005. You are going to need all the extra stuff like the heat exchanger, trans cooler, auto wiring, shifter, interior plastic, the input shaft for the transfer case to match the 48re. Also the driveshafts are going to have to be taken care of.

I would be more than willing to swap stock for stock and give you extra money for the clutch etc.

I live in Southern Indiana. Is this something you want to do in a weekend with both trucks next to eachother to make sure everything is complete or pull apart and deliver/swap a truck load of parts?

My trans has 55,6xx miles on it as of this morning.

Any of you guys thinking about swapping have a long bed? I'm trying to figure out if we'd both have to buy new driveshafts before even starting?

My wife said I couldn't do it in the next month or two but I'm trying to butter her up for not too far down the road. I fully expect that there will be things that come up that aren't expected when swapping.

Thanks for the info fellas
