Trans temp high limit

I have a Edge Insight CTS2 gauges-only setup. It has the ability to set alarms when critical levels are reached on monitored items. It is currently getting the trans temp via the OBD port. I read somewhere that 260 is the threshold that the ECU uses to start warning the driver and taking action. I would like it never to reach that level. Would it be reasonable to set my gauge alarm to 240 and start taking corrective measures at that point? Or should I go lower yet?

Normal cruising while towing 12K stays in the 185-210 range depending on hills, etc. But I have seen it creep up into the 220s and once it even reached 235 during low speed climbs and putting around campgrounds maneuvering into sites.

From my research, in gears 1-4 are pretty strong and can handle a bit higher temps. Trans temp should be about 100°higher than outside temps. From what I've read it's your overdrive gears that you want cool, tho obviously our trannys don't like extreme heats. Sounds like it might be getting a little hot, but I bought mine with 200k on it and the trannys been rebuilt but I can climb to 170 or so just putting thru town some days. I would almost say change the fluid I bet your temps will be lower, I've got H&S Mini Maxx but it's got the defuel/safety setting too, I've ran it without for a year in hot mode temps seem fine.

One thing I will say is mine runs at about 150 to 140 while cruising in 5th or 6th gear, when I haul its not that heavy so that may be pretty good with that kinda weight, usually I haul about 5-6k and free doesn't vary from unloaded if I can stay in 5th or 6th,which I've gotta Trans tune that makes it so that happens more often

There is a huge difference between a 48RE and a 68RFE, comparisons do not work.

240 degrees is where the dash lights and shift modifications start, set it just under that and oyu should be fine.

I get nervous around 200 deg for any length of time and 170* or more intermittently. I live by the rule the cooler the better where an auto trans is concerned. I also have two 25 row Derale coolers up front, and an Aux cooler with a thermostat and fan under the bed for emergencies.

Damn man that's what's up. My 68RFE came with an aux cooler at least as far as I was concerned. Carfax did state Trans rebuild at like 180k or so so maybe that was put in then. I go by the old life expectancy chart and if my trans were to get at 170 or more at regular operating temp that still gives me 100k miles to save up for a new one or rebuild kit lol at 200°regular operating temp that would leave it about 75k according the chart I read

Those charts for 30 year old standard transmission fluids, not the newer synthetics. It just doesn't apply.

ATF+4 has been test at 315 degrees for 1500 hours and still meet the ISO standards for scar and lubricity performance, the fluid and normal temps in the in the 180-220 degree range are not an issue. The crappy NVH build and shoddy materials in the clutches and steels are another story hence the recommendation to change fluids on 20-30k intervals depending on usage.

The difference between 1800 and 220 degrees is not going to gain\lose any life expectancy. There are things much worse than those temps that will kill the transmissions in short order.

Right on dude I did not realize that! And just to clarify, I'm not being sarcastic, I honestly didn't know that info. Thanks for teaching me something that's not scary about my trans

Verify that your monitor is reading correctly before getting too worked up. My experience has shown the digital displays that read out info from the data stream are horribly inaccurate. They are typically anywhere from 20-30 degrees off.

Ya I've been told that too I just figure it runs off the ECU if the ECU sensed Trans problem I'd probably get a lift plus it's a chrysler product we all know how they are about their lights which if I were to get a trans code in the tuner or a trans light even I'd treat it as if my truck was dying and get it checked out asap just good to know the Trans fluids of today have much better tolerances, plus if I were to get and slipping or hear and noises I'd freak out pretty much the same so all is well hope for the best right but I'm gonna change the fluid soon and I'll get a better idea at that point

I dunno, my trans shifts the best the cooler it is before it looses it's viscosity. Some like changing smoked bands, and clutch packs I guess.
