HPT tuning experiment

Started retuning the truck today after all the changes recently. I feel there is some fuel economy left on the table and am going after it. I'd mentioned a while back that I'd use a fixed route at a fixed speed to see how a given change effected the performance. Since I look to the Calc Load values for guidance, I graphed 2 runs I did today.

1st run, existing tune that I've been running. I've had 2 tanks recently, 1 @ 22.2(? see signature) and 1 @ 21.99x mpg.

2nd run, reduced fuel pressure in the 8 fuel cells used during cruising (small change) and adjusted timing in only the cells that get hit at the MM3 range at the rpms that I get while cruising @ 60 mph. I plan to duplicate this effort again either early morning or late night with a higher speed, 65~67 mph. RE Timing... since I cut fuel, timing had to change. Also tweeked the pedal map.

Anyways, here is the graph. You can see where the 1st run exceeds the 2nd run load values. Couple of things come to mind when looking at it, with the load dropping on the 2nd run (modded tune), need to keep in mind that fuel pressure changed which may also affect the calc load value.

the graph represents the route taken, hilly for the most part with 1 or 2 flat spots...

cruise control handled the throttle set at 60 mph.

forgot to mention... in pulling the fuel back and changing the timing it appears to pull stronger when driving normal and using the changed area of the tune. This is purely a SOTP feel and could be a placebo effect.

What is your total fuel rate at that cruise speed?
My truck takes about 47-52mm to cruise.
I have my timing less than 10*. Around 7* for light cruise. Any more than that and it clatters pretty badly.
I just recently redid my timing using the udc calculator I found so it's at a 50/50 split from btdc/atdc. They say that split isn't perfect for every cell but that's what I ran with for now.
Comparing this tune to stock ecu and edge cts2 level 1, I'm +3mpg
59turbo likes this.

On the flats its 34-36mm3 iirc... Hmmm, maybe that might be worth graphing as well... I will have a look and get back on it, possibly tonite but most likely saturday afternoon.

I do know the load accumulators favor the current tune over the first tune when i started.

That's pretty good. You're truck is setup a lot differently I think. My truck is just a hog with a stock tirbo

yeah agreed... taking it back to stock height and lighter oem wheels has helped mpg a lot. that 22.207 mpg in the sig is the current high for 1 tank since switching to HPT.

And... bumping this one back up. This is where I started using the hilly hiway route to compare tune changes. This has proven to be an awesome way to verify a change, provided the change is done quickly and the route can be re-run under the same ambeint conditions...

Custom tuning... worth every minute of time spent.
