need help with 2-3 flare shift

i am definetely a newbie here looking for suggestions and advice on my tranny. I bought the truck with mods to the tranny (DTT Stage 2 Master kit). Was told it shifts hard due to high line pressure and will stop when i put tuner to stock. Tried that and still having a flare shift from 2-3, all other gears are good with hard shifts. I have contacted everybody i could in the area, includng other guys with cummins. I hear something different from all of them, from adjusting front band, buy the valve body upgrade kit from DTT, upgrade valve body, and drum issue. I want to fix this problem before it gets worse and need some expertise from the guys on here.

I have checked the fluid and its a little over full. Before operating temp it shifts fine, but once it is over 190 it starts flaring at 25-30 mph going into 3rd gear. If i am on it, it doesnt do it, but if i feather it, you can feel it everytime.

There are no other issues with the truck other than this and any help would be appreciated.

First, adjust the front band. this has a good potential for improve.. You might try adjusting band very slightlly less than spec. Say 1/8 turn less (no more)
Next thought is not so good. A very light throttle upshift from 2-3 may be a indication of excess front clutch wear. Not failed yet, but over specs.
Change fluid if not already done and use ATF+4 of course.

I appreciate the help, hopefully this works. I will do this first thing in the morning. I had Goerend send me the the instr. on how to adjust the front band, is this what you are talking about? I am going to drain about 1 quart of fluid tomorrow to get it to level and do the front brand. Does this have anything to do with drum. 2 shops told me yes and 3 told me no. Would it help to get the valve body kit? I do not have the time or funds to do a full upgrade but want this tranny to run for a while. I ask all these questions as i am in the military and mostplaces around here are not diesel "mechanics". Just trying to drop tranny to make a buck. Thanks again and will let you post if this worked.

So finally got to adjusting front band and no change. I even re adjusted it and then tried adjusting it 1/4 at a time as others have tried. Any other suggestions or ideas that may fix the issue. The other day, it shifted not once with a flare. Yesterday and most other days itdoes it every time once it is running at operating temp.

Should i look into the clutch wear as stated earlier and/or drums?

Hummmmm! you can try adjusting the throttle cable. Check at short lever on left side of tranny. It should be fully forward at closed throttle and start moving immediatelly with throttle movement. 30 mph is a little high to be going into 3rd at light throttle. Test with a little more clearance than specified. The adjustment is on APPS. Unlock a white clip on cable and will almost self adjust...
does it clunk or shift hard into reverse?? frequentlly..

My fault. It goes into 3rd roughly 25. My speedo is 5 over. It is a hard shift in all gears and sometimes clunks into reverse. I am trying to pinpoint the issue as it is a common one I see on the forums. It does it at light throttle and every now and then at mid throttle. If I am on it, it's fine. I will try what u said this week sometime. I don't haul anything yet and most issues on here are when they are hauling. I will try to get a video of it on my way to work. Thanks again

Step 1 - get rid of the piece of s**t DTT equipment

Step 2 - Call Goerend. Garmin, etc and get some proper stuff in there.

I've been pissed off with my DTT transmission since day one. Only good part of it is the converter but that's because I bought it from Goerend (after DTT f**ked up several times and after 5 weeks I still hadn't receieved my converter).

I'm going to be pullin this DTT valve body kit out of my truck in the not so distant future and replacing it with something that actually works. I've got a similar problem to you and nothing seems to fix it. Anything more than 1/4 throttle and shift 2-3 hangs. Truck will run up to 60mph in second gear till you let off throttle for a few seconds then shifts.

Same thing if you are cruising at highway speed and pull out to pass. Truck will downshift from OD straight to second gear. Nothing like seeing your truck hit 3500+rpm at 60mph.

Tempted to pull this stuff out of my transmission, put it all in a box, s**t in the box, and send it back to DTT.

Absolute garbage.

I don't think the 48re uses a TV cable. I hav 03 with 47re that had same problem as the OP, I threw lots of trany parts at it...a free, 15 minute tv cable adjust is what fixed it. So if ur truck uses a tv cable, I would try that.

Hey,
I've got a serious flare between 2nd and 3rd. The truck is still at the Tranny Shop, Since it just got an expensive rebuild, with Racing Clutches, and A Billet Torque Converter, and Billet input Shaft. And a Fresh, Beefed up Valve Body. The Flare is New. I didn't have it when I brought it in. The Veteran Tranny Guy is Stumped. He doesn't get online, so I have to figure it out. We just put in a Billet Servo, to replace a Plastic One.
It also seems to come out of 1st gear when cruising at 5 to 15 mph, unless I hit the throttle, then it will come back. So with all new parts, What could it be ??
48RE, 4 Speed Automatic. Let me know if you learn anything about yours, and I'll do the same. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
