Upgrade to He351 or ?

Wanting to upgrade my stock turbo and I know there are tons out there. I don't need nothing radical because I'm not going to be drag racing, just pulling RV 6-10 times a year but want more hp. I plan on staying with stock stick's until they give out then I'll put 50's in but for now just want a upgraded turbo and I hear that the He351 would be a good option but need info and advice, Thanks Bob

The HE351 will be a nice little upgrade over the HE341. So you can either upgrade your turbo or upgrade your tuning. You'll gain more from upgrading your tuning.

I'm running the Edge cs , when towing I have it on tow mode so would it be better then to upgrade turbo for more boost while towing since the tuner is already set for tow ?

Going from box tunes (like edge) to custom tuning is a night and day difference. You gain more overall going to custom tuning vs swapping turbos. You can always install an HE351 and if you're still looking for more, then upgrade your tuning.

Yes..

The 2003-04 HE341 turbo is very small. Upgrading that to the larger 2004.5-2007 HE351 is an excellent upgrade.
It's a common upgrade that has been done by many since 2004.5! A search on this forum will bring up tons of info.

It will bolt in but there are few mods that you should do.

- Full 4" turbo elbow and exhaust. The 2003-04 trucks have a 3.5" exhaust, the 2004.5-07 trucks have a full 4.0" exhaust.
The HE341 has a 4" outlet but the turbo elbow necks down to 3.5". The HE351 has a full 4" elbow.
- The HE351 has the electric wastegate which the HE341 does not. You will need to convert the HE351 to a mechanical wastegate.
You will need the special wastegate plug for the HE351.
- Some kind of boost fooling. Your Edge likely does this already.
- If you still have the 2003 exhaust manifold, I would recommend to upgrade that at the same time. Even a new Cummins ex manifold is better.
Cummins redesigned the 2003+ ex manifold several times, adding more material every time to deal with cracking and warping.
I recommend to remove/install the ex manifold and turbo as a single assembly.

As Grunt mentioned, you should upgrade your Edge CS. You likely have high EGT's while towing.
Interceptor modules like the Edge are outdated and not that great.
An ECM programmer is much better. Unplug most of your Edge CS and use it as gauges and research ECM programmers.
An MM3 is well worth looking into.

Your sig states your auto trans is already upgraded.
The stock size injectors are totally fine. Even 50HP injectors will cause high EGT's when towing with the HE351 turbo.
I hope this info helps...

Great info! Iím a little surprised that I was not aware of the HE341. I thought 03-07 all had the HE351

I didn't try the 351 on my 03 305 but going to a II PS 62/65/14 made a heck of an improvement... without any fueling yet. Then I eventually got a TST PMCR and it became a towing monster! I had a DS Predator for 5 years and I will say the 100hp/econ tune made a terrific tow tune... a little tq mngt. below 1500 to save the clutch or auto, very good top end and power curve. You can find them cheap. Craig

If you take something apart and put it back together often enough, you will end up with two of them!

If you get an HE351 the plugs are like $30-40 (so you can leave the reference line to the actuator open) and you can either get an adjustable wastegate actuator (stock is fixed to 22/23psi) or get a manual boost controller.

Both will honestly cost about the same ($100-130), but since the wastegate isn't really adjustable once installed with the 3rd gen manifolds, the boost controller is nice for dialing in what you want exactly or if you change your mind later.

You can find cheaper boost controllers but you usually get what you pay for. I think mine is from grimmspeed and it's been really nice.

I have an 05, but dumped the solenoid a while back and put in the plug and the boost controller. I have an AFE wastegate actuator set at 32psi but didn't want to pull it to change to 40psi when my solenoid died. So boost controller ftw!
