Hot egts

I have an 05 2500 with 75hp injectors and a 63/64 taterbuilt turbo. Factory cp3 165 air dog and a south bend dual disc clutch. I feel like my egts are pretty high for the air/fuel set up I have, running down the interstate at 70 mph on flat ground I’m right around 700 degrees and pulling a hill I’ll hit 900-1000 in a hurry. Even just running through the gears around town I’ll creep up on 1000 degrees and have to really back out of the throttle. I’ve always heard that smarty tuners over fuel so I think I’m going to get in to hp tuners and hopefully that will help. Is there anything else anyone would recommend to try and get these egts down I thought about meth injection but don’t really know what the success rate is on these trucks. Any tuning advice or other changes to what I have would be appreciated

1000 is fine if thatís you max.

But a custom tune will help immensely.

It’ll hit 12-1400 on a solid pull no problem, ive never pushed it past that, always lift at 1300 or so. And this is all with out a trailer. Not that I do much heavy towing but id be afraid to. Any recommendations on where to pick up an hp tuner and custom tunes?

Your turbo is to small for the fuel you have. You need a custom tune to dial in your setup.

optimal welding has shift on the fly knobs and custom tuning. Never personally used them, but I've heard good things. I've talked to Mat, the owner and he seems to know what hes doing. Calibrated addiction, firepunk, maverick etc. plenty of well respected options out there.

Also maybe think about a steed speed exhaust manifold before you do another turbo. There are a few test articles out there that have really impressive results with those things.

If youre only hitting 1000 degrees pulling a hill that's money. How hot of a tune do you have it set on currently is something that should be asked here as well, if you've got it cranked up fairly high then yea EGTs are going to be high ESPECIALLY when towing. Is that 1000 degrees up a hill loaded or empty? Is that in 6th or 5th gear and where were the RPMs pulling that hill? Which tuner do you have, S06, JR, etc?
Now if youre itching to spend money YES get some custom tunes as they will be the best thing overall for both EGTs and HP numbers, however comma what on earth did us 03-05 guys do before HPT or MM3?????? oh we all used smarty and raved about how good it was, so there isn't a "NEED" to run out and get custom tunes as it can be done on your Smarty it may just take some playing around to get it dialed in.

Iím not seeing a problem. I hit 950 with compounds and BBI .5 injectors running up a hill and 700ís cruising.8 can hit 1250-1300 on a hard uphill pull. Your egts look perfects and normal.

I wouldn’t say itching to spend money lol but if gaining hp and longevity cost a few $$ I’ll get over it. 1000 degrees is no problem with out a load. I’m not knocking smarty at all I guess just curious if there’s something else out there that might be better. If compounds is just what needs to happen for the amount of fuel I’m running that’ll be a bullet I’ll have to bite

You're fine, when I put my foot in it and hold it I see 1600 pretty fast, but I cruise 75 mph @ 600

I turn OD off on hills when I hit 1200. EGTs are controllable on my tuning though. They don't get out of hand at all. I have never had to back out. Just downshifting was always enough to pull temps down.

So some perspective. My buddies truck that I do all the work on is an 05 built auto running a 63/68/.91 T4, we just did a set of 100hp SAC style injectors, valvesprings and pushrods. That truck on the 90hp Catcher which is SW6 I believe will hit 1600 on a good hard pull all day. Back the tune off to the 30hp tune (so total of 130hp over stock with the injectors) and towing a trailer, total gross weight of almost 17k he only sees around 1100 degrees running 70 up a grade. Your turbo is fine for the size of injector you are running you just don't need to push as much tuning on it to achieve the same results as before the injectors, if that makes sense. Now your EGTs are well within normal and not a concern whatsoever so send it. Remember to back down the tuning when towing and even then on a long uphill grade you'll still see 12-1300 degrees which still isn't a concern provided its not for a long extended period of time and doesn't climb into 1500 degree range for long(I wouldn't try pushing it when you see 1300 just for the record, keep an eye on it and your foot steady to see what shes going to to climb or hold steady and adjust the right foot accordingly). As long as you can cool things back down after a hot pull, I'm talkin 1400 and up, there's no real issue if its occasional and not for extended periods of time. Now compounds will definitely bring temps down and MPG up , which is the route I will eventually go, but they are $2-6k depending on what brand and size etc.... no "need" to jump to that right away especially with the size turbo you are running you can still make 5-600hp and have things under control and in normal acceptable range.

Just food for thought and my opinion personally. BTW fill out your sig with your trucks information and mods so everyone can see what the setup is you are relating to in a thread or post.
