Cummins Swap Setup Input

Hello all,

Iím new to the common rail scene so I have some ideas but would like input on my general setup.

2003 Ford Excursion 4x4, 5R110 Built with stock common rail stall triple disc (1600-1800?). Weighs 9k empty, 35ís, 2Ē lift, 3.73 gears. It is primarily the mommy mobile so the main focus will be on drivability, reliability, and noise as she hated how loud it was with the 6.0 and my truck (12v). Future plans call for a super hitch and an 11k travel trailer. She also does occasional tow duty with dump trailer (14k) and such.

Looking for a daily tune of around 500-550rwhp and the ability to turn it up to 650 ish. But that wonít be too often I hope.

Engine is a 2005 with 160k, wrecked running truck. Was used up in northern BC as a hunting guide truck, had an oil pan heater in addition the the block heater on it. Donít know anything else about the motor.

Parts:

- Reuse the Donaldson intake from 6.0 (best filtering and should flow plenty for 500-550)
- he351/gta4202 compounds. (Worth it to upgrade 351 wheels?). GTA is a 75/103 compressor and 82/75 turbine with 1.15 wastegated housing. I own both turbos already although the 351 is stock from the truck so will get a rebuild at very least.
- 6.0 upgraded banks intercooler with 3.5Ē inlet/outlets (already in vehicle)
- some cheap intake horn thatís 3.5Ē.
- grid heaters will remain
- debating pulling head for HG as it is in unknown condition. If I do Iíll do mild porting myself and get a valve job done.
- Steed manifold
- 5Ē turbo back exhaust if I can find it for the Excursion. (Has a banks 4Ē I might just keep to make it easier for now)
- cp3 sent to MD diesel for a flow test and arson 3 upgrades
- Injectors sent to MD diesel for flow test and 35% upgrade (65hp)
- coolant bypass
- if I pull the head Iíll thread the coolant plugs under cover
- Hamilton 178/208 cam with their vs, rappers and pushrods
- Fluidampr
- ARP 2000 head studs (unless the rumored Hamilton studs are released)
- FASS titanium 95 (already own bnib) and beans sump
- new oil pump for good measure
- Custom HPT tuning by me for engine and transmission
- CTS2 gauge setup.

Sorry for the long list and words. Any questions or comments let me know.

It's a waste money to "upgrade" the wheels in it. Also if you planned on putting a cam in it, your money is better spent elsewhere.

As far as the wheels. I was more referring to size. Bigger turbine do reduce dp or at my hp goals unnecessary.

And the cam: I got a new one for a song and motor is in garage so going ahead with it. Itís only gonna add to efficiency, itís the whole combination not just a few parts that make a difference.

If you pull the head you need to have block resurfaced as well. FYI. Sounds like a good plan. Have fun.

I hogged out the wastegate on my HE351 to help lower DP. It still gets a little on the high side, but not terrible. You'll also have a little more fuel then me.

Head studs, resurfacing, tapping the freeze plugs are the main things. Many normal places won't know what thats about so its best to find a cummins familiar shop. And when you do find a cummins shop they will hopefully know how to keep the valve seats in it.

Really be thorough cleaning the block. Use a razor blade to gently scrape off anything remaining on it. The 100% sure fire method is to pull the block and resurface it as well. But if you do a good job cleaning the junk off hopefully you won't have any issue.

Surely people donít machine the block every time a head gasket fails? Just trying to get educated, I have no experience with the MLS gaskets.

Would you recommend replacing the studs one at a time instead?

Surely... the smart ones do. On 12valves its alot less of an issue. CR's different beasts.

Yes If the motor is believed to be in good running condition and you trust that source I would leave it. Studs one at a time.
