2006 Dodge Ram Dash Mounted Gauges

Build Log

I have wanted to do in dash gauges (I really do not care for A pillar gauges) for my dodge for some time. I tow a large 5th wheel and would like t see what's gong on. I planned to do this a year ago but I was going to pay someone to do it and lacked motivation. After seeing the Sound Man ipad2 install on engadget, I started watching all of their episodes. As this will involve fiber glassing the dash up I purchased a replacement from ebay for $40 w/ shipping.

Link to current version of the doc

Goals
  • Add gauges in dash
  • Update interior to leather with heated seats and new carpet
  • Update bottom barrel stock sound system
  • Maintain factory look and be able to return everything to stock (not including the carpet or seats)
  • Stay
in budget
Stereo $1200
Gauges $500
Leather $1500
Parts

Stereo
  • Clarion FZ501 - I would rate tis a 7 out of 10 as the Sirius is simple t hookup and comes with Bluetooth but using the remote for most things is a bit of a pain
  • Sirius sc-c1 - fm radio sucks
  • Boston Acoustics SC95
  • JL CP108LG-w3v - this is awesome tiny yet really fills the giant cab with bass
  • Boston Acoustics S65
  • Clarion RCB199 - built in mic sucks
  • Alpine MRP-M500 - excellent amp nice and small
  • Gauges
  • Autometer Dodge factory match
  • 8544 Pyrometer
  • 8557 Trans Temp
  • 8505 Boost
    Dash Mod
  • metra adapter 99-6507
  • Replacement dash from ebay
  • Fiberglass kit
  • Short hair fiber glass
  • Body filler
  • Tape
  • Tinfoil
Leather

Progress

Original Posting
  • Took measurements and created a mechanical dimensioned drawing in visio to ensure everything will fit.
  • This video helped with the dash removal
  • Here is a link to that autometer gauge specs
  • Installed all stereo gear. Purchased all gear from Crutchfield. Their instructions and adapters were helpful.
  • Took about 4 hours mainly due to my anal retentive nature and removing the entire front bench seat to put the amp under it.
  • Doug at SoundMan would be very happy. I drilled a hole scraped the paint and put a nut (nyloc so it wont back off) and bolt on it.
  • I used crimp caps not butt connectors. The guys at SoundMan mentioned this in one of the Q&A videos. Watch the you might learn something.
  • The scosche radio adapter needs to be ditched for the metra adapter 99-6507 (this will need some work). The Metra positions the radio up much higher up in the dash
  • Next up prep the dash
  • Install the metra adapter
  • Modify as needed
  • Prep dash for fiberglass

Subscribed, been thinking of doing something similar with the lower part of the dash (behind the cup holders).

Update

11 Aug update

I decided itwould be best if I glued the metra adapter in place prior to fiberglassing it in. I was able to fiberglass theo pen slots and the metra trim in place and am waiting for it to dry.

While I waited for it to dry I decided to remove the cubbie from the metra panel as it will just interfered with the gauge installation.

12 Aug update

Got a late starttoday as I went to the exotic car meet but I was still able to make significant progress. I was able to grind the fiberglass flat, fill the gaps with short hair fiberglass, sand that down, fill the pin holes with bodyfiller, sand that and primer the piece. I decided to wrap all the fake wood in the truck like this post shows. My last step until I get the wrap is to drill the wholes for he gauges and a light sanding of the primer.
