Fuel heater location

I’m was wanting to know where the fuel heater was located, I was going to do a fuel filter delete because I added a cat filter in the back.. but if the heater is in the front filter I will leave it in place... I am currently having problems with it surging at idle when it’s cold as well

IIRC, it's in the water separator/filter housing.

Surging at idle

When the trucks cold, it likes to surge at idle, if it idles for 5-10 minutes it seems to be fine, or if I just drive it’s fine. Always fine if it’s warm.. first noticed it when we were on vacation and at higher elevations it was doing the same thing in the morning, with fairly new fuel filters

If the truck is the 2014 in your signature.....have you verified that the rear separator heater was actually enabled on your truck? All 2013ís and an early portion of 2014ís were NOT enabled due to an error in programming.

A multimeter and a few minutes of your time is all it takes to verify.

The thing is... with the surging, it can be 50-60 degrees out, with the first start, it surges, so I don’t think the heater really has anything to do with the surging

When did the surging begin?

On the 99 the fuel heater is in the top of the fuel filter housing. Should not be surging after first 30 seconds even when cold. Better describe "surging".

It swings from normal which is like 700, down to like 500, even when I take off at idle and up to around 1000 rpm, then it smooths out, once it’s warm it’s fine

It’s been doing this more the last couple of months but probably started randomly a couple years ago

It's not a 99, 2014 according to the signature.

Sounds like a fuel rail pressure issue, need to get a gauge on it and see what it's doing.
