That Rattle though!

I have researched this for some time now, but never asked about it, but was curious what the general consensus is. My truck has a slight rattle, almost like spark knock when light on the throttle between 1700ish to 2200ish rpms..Seems more throttle makes it disappear. More load makes it disappear. Seems something with timing. Its not super loud like somethings gonna fly apart or anything but loud enought to barely notice it there.. Its not there 100% of the time eiither. Been like that since new and having never owned a diesel before I assumed it normal. With 18K onit now, its no worse or better and performance has not changed.
On research I have found several reports of the same thing and read everything from "it's a cummins its noisy" and " mine has done that for 200K miles" To " OMG its ready to explode" Thoughts?
Gotta say the noise does not bother me, I rather like, it if its not destroying something!

OMG its ready to explode!!!!!!!!! LOL
What you need to do is go find an old truck with a 1693 CAT and fire it up!! Hence, the term “Rattlin’ Cat”!
Of course, nne of us can hear your engine run, so everything is just a guess; but I would say it is just a “hummin’ Cummins”!

You say the noise doesn't bother you and yet here you are asking about it.

Turn the radio up, noise fixed!

Mine makes the exact same part-throttle rattle.
Figure it is the nature of the beast.

Some have tried adjusting the valve lash to reduce the clatter, but I've only heard mixed results.
You could take it into a reputable shop and have them listen to it.
But I'd be more concerned about a NEW noise, not the clatter it's had since new.

Yes, I actually like the sound, almost old schoolish, like said though, I only like it if its not self destructing!

Thats my thoughts as well, I'm not really worried per se, just curious as to exactly what makes it do its thing.

Funny you mention that because I had read that as well, also with mixed results. The kicker being, I dont know of any reputable diesel shops here. I mean we have a few, but how good are they, I dunno.

Adjusting the valves wont make the rattle go away, its timing rattle. OP could add an additive that will advance timing which will most likely get rid of it. Over in the 5.9 world (on my truck cause it is de-tuned significantly for FE reasons, 21+ mpg all year long) we use dex/merc atf with tw-c3 2 stroke oil (2SO). You can try the 2SO at a high ratio and should not have any exhaust issues (yes, I did it already & ran ~50k on a dpf equipped diesel using 8oz 2SO to 13gal fuel with zero issues)

I dont recommend power service diesel, find something else like Howes or Stanadyne (sp?)

Likely fuel rail rattle that you are hearing. But that’s just my guess. Normal sound for these engines.

It's a diesel, it's gonna rattle a little.

I've found mine generally "likes", and rattles less, with a little higher cetane than you get at most pumps. I don't use it all the time but when I want cetane boost I use the PS Diesel Kleen in the gray jug, just because it's readily available....

Rattle is bad, its the force the combustion is exerting on the crank in the wrong direction. Will it kill your motor, not likely with a stock tune but it does rob mpg. It is done that way for emissions... something to do with NOX reduction.
