What’s a GOOD battery maintainer?

I want to purchase a good battery maintainer. I will be out of town for a year and I want to take care of the batteries in my truck.

What do you suggest? Price is not an issue.

Do you need one or two?

Should you disconnect your batteries first??

How does charging your batteries on a two-battery system work??

One 1.25 amp battery tender will be fine. Just hook it up to one battery. I usually connect to the passenger side.

I use BatteryMINDer and Pulsetech, both of which have desulfation which helps a lot.

I had one and used it on my mower. The one thing I noticed was that it put out the same charge. It overcharged the mower battery. My Schumacher charger is several years old, and maybe they operate differently now, IDK.

I switched to the Battery Tender for this reason. When full charge is obtained, it switches to storage charge. (If I'm telling this right.) I've not overcharged my mower battery since I started using the Battery Tender. I think the Battery Tenders work well. Purchased this mower July of 2015, and still using the original battery.

The Schumacher charger was on my pre 2015 mower. Things may have very well changed from then to now.

That's worse luck than even my typical version, it sounds like.

I've used BatteryMINDers for over 20 years now, with no issues whatsoever. Instead, they've been part of keeping some batteries from the late Nineties still going strong.

What kind of batteries does your truck have?

R12 in the summer, Webasto in the winter; cassette tapes & SAE-20078 all year.
