Oil Sample

2500 miles on oil sample and Blackstone is concerned about a 34 iron level. Any experts on the forum that know if this should be concerning?14 RAM-200106.pdf

Your pdf link wants to download to my computer and I don't want to download it.

A higher than normal iron level would indicate some sort of excessive wear on cylinder walls.

These engines shed iron. It's what they do. How long an oil change index to reach 34ppm?

As my engine is breaking in I had about 7ppm/1000 miles when tested around the 30,000 mile mark.

When tested at the 45,000 mile mark I was down to the 5ppm/1000 mile mark.

I run the full 15k index. My iron is high as the engine is breaking in. Also not worried as cummins does not really spec a specific condemnation limit on iron but rather it requires trending to see how the engine wears. The other part why I am not worried is that the oil life was fine. Low fuel, low soot, high viscosity retention and high additive numbers.

Don't just look at the iron, look at the whole picture and remember, one test is only a snap shot at that given time. You need many, many more tests to begin trending.

Oh well I suppose if I payed attention I would see the mileage.

What is the mileage on the truck? Can you repost the analysis please? It's not linked anymore.

My oil has been at 50ppm for all three samples I have pulled. Last one was 18k miles. No concerns here.

At 42k on the truck and 15000 on the oil I was at 79ppm. Mostly valvoline, one mystery oil change at the dealer.
