Daily driving with stuck VGT

I have been driving on a stuck vgt for some miles now, the turbo spools the same as stock I just do not have a exhaust brake which I never use. I was wondering how long can you drive on a vgt that's bad before it damages your engine or headgasket.

Thank you!!

Forever.

The only way anything else would be damaged would be if it made too much boost.

And, obviously the vanes are not stuck if it is making proper boost, it's the actuator not operating properly.

I thought the actuator is the reason why the turbo has boost at lower rpms? I mean it acts like stock but no EB.

Learn me! Haha thanks!

If the turbo is still making proper boost throughout the rpm range, then the vanes are not stuck, at least not completely, and the reason why the EB isn't working is that the actuator isn't closing off the vanes.

Very likely that if the actuator was removed, the vanes would still travel through their complete range, and a new actuator would fix the issue. But, you wouldn't know for sure until you take it apart and check it.

Your actuator is bad. I have the same problem on my 14. I have some boost, spools up slow. Sometimes works good, other times only half the psi it should have. No exhaust brake, CEL on. Did you pull any codes? What were they?

Only time it can hurt anything is if the veins are stuck closed, like the EB is engaged. Then there would be too much back pressure. Sounds like yours is just limited in the percentage it can close down. It could stay that way for quite a long time or the actuator could take a complete dump and stop working all together which could hamper drive ability a lot. My crystal ball is broken, so I can't tell you when that will happen.

I did pull codes but I keep deleting them with my EFI live autocal. Next time it pops I'll pull it. Also, my CEL turns on every once and a week or so. Wanting to do a turbo swap to fixed vane but damn it's expensive (for me).

I talked to the local dealer. They wanted 3600 for actuator and replacement. I can get a whole turbo for less than that. I'm getting a small diesel shop near me to do the actuator replacement. 1000 for actuator and a couple hundred for install and calibration.
My CEL comes on for a day or two, then it will go out for a day or two.

Yeah I parted out a 3rd gen swap for $950 and I am just going that route now that doesn't include tuning which I'll pay extra $350 for revision but do it once and be done with it.
