Swapping 3.42 to 4.10 Gears Budget

Hello, y'all,

I just wanted to know what all it takes to swap out the gears in my 14 2500 from 3.42 to 4.10 as budget friendly as possible. I am located in Joplin, MO and I have found some entire kits to re-gear for around $1,100 to 1,300 and I was just wanting to know if I could re-use stock internals with my current gears for the swap.

I have watched a lot of re-gearing youtube videos and its super involved to DIY it. I am new to the whole aspect of re-gearing my boiiiis.

Learn me!

Thanks, y'all!

If you had a 2018 yes. Your truck is 6 years old. Don’t reuse stock internals.

I would caution you to reach out to someone familiar with gear swaps to assist you, or do the install. Installing gears isn't as easy as other things and does require the correct tools, and knowledge to use the tools. Once you have the knowledge and the tools it's pretty straight forward, but i would caution you to bring in someone to help you set everything up correctly. It's a great learning experience, but your learning experience can go from budget friendly to expensive quickly if you don't have someone to help teach you

Exactly, the main reason why I am just going to have someone do it while I just watch because all of the particulars involved with aligned and making sure everything is tightened to spec.

I do appreciate the FYI!

Yes, sir!

Seems it's going to have to go that route! I rather not screw anything up! Budget friendly as much as possible without cutting corners to make the swap even more expensive down the road.

The only complex tools are a dial caliper and a torque wrench. Spend 5 minutes on YouTube to learn how to use them and you’re all set. It’s not hard. Just time consuming. You can do it by yourself in one day.

F&R gear sets, F&R Master Install Kita with good bearings (Timkin), and possibly new carriers, but Iím not 100% on that. You can probably look that up to see if the 3.42 carriers will work. You will need gear paint, and a dial caliper with a magnetic base to set backlash. Lots of brake clean, new RTV sealant (high-temp), and something to clean the old sealant off the diff & cover. I use a wire cup brush on a 1/4Ē die-grinder. Just cover up everything before, so you donít get particles in your diff.

If youíve never done it before, get someone experienced to help you so you learn the right way to do it.
